UPS Team Performance Index: Florida State more than a statistical giant

Based on the UPS Team Performance Index?a formulaic ranking system devised by UPS and STATS LLC?we alerted you a week ago that Notre Dame?s game vs. Purdue would be closer than expected. The Irish were 18th in the TPI, to the Boilermakers? 19th. Indeed, the heavily favored home team needed a late field goal to beat its in-state rival.

There?s no need to hunt and peck for trends this week, because the TPI top five?Florida State, TCU, USC, Kansas State and LSU?includes four teams (sorry, TCU) that rank among the top eight in both of Sporting News' college football writers' polls.

So let?s look at FSU. Might the Seminoles?coming off an absurdly light night vs. Savannah State?be not just a statistical giant but a potential national champion?

The answer is an unequivocal yes. FSU might not be an underdog in any game this regular season; if it takes care of Clemson in Tallahassee on Sept. 22, it could easily be 9-0 when it faces Virginia Tech on Nov. 8 in Blacksburg.

The Seminoles? offensive rankings (28th in rushing, 34th in passing) are compromised because the Savannah State game ended in the third quarter. But those numbers speak to the balance Jimbo Fisher?s attack brings to bear. Defensively, FSU has the capability to dominate.

If they take care of business this weekend vs. Wake Forest?and that means more than just winning?the Seminoles could be TPI stars for the long haul.
