Why The Left-Brain Right-Brain Myth Will Probably Never Die ...

Christian Jarrett ? Psychology Today

The myth of the logical left hemisphere and the creative right hemisphere has become a powerful and useful metaphor for understanding the human brain. But while this notion is not entirely unfounded, it?s one that psychologist?Christian Jarrett?says we should challenge. Find out what the left-brain/right-brain model gets right ? and how it misleads you about your own brain.

The left-brain right-brain myth will probably never die because it has become a powerful metaphor for different ways of thinking ? logical, focused and analytic, versus broad-minded and creative. Take the example of Britain?s Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks?talking on BBC Radio 4 earlier this year. ?What made Europe happen and made it so creative,? he explained, ?is that Christianity was a right-brain religion ? translated into a left-brain language [Greek]. So for many centuries you had this view that science and religion are essentially part of the same thing.?

As well as having metaphorical appeal, the seductive idea of the right brain and its untapped creative potential also has a long history of being targeted by self-help gurus peddling pseudo-psychology. Today the same idea is also picked up by the makers of self-improvement video games and apps. The latest version of the The Faces iMake-Right Brain Creativity app for the iPad, for example, boasts that it is ?an extraordinary tool for developing right brain creative capabilities?.

Why The Left-Brain Right-Brain Myth Will Probably Never DieThere is more than a grain of truth to the left-brain right-brain myth. While they look alike, the two hemispheres of the brain do function differently. For example, it?s become almost common knowledge that in most people the left brain is dominant for language. The right hemisphere, on the other hand, is implicated more strongly in emotional processing and representing the mental states of others. However, the distinctions aren?t as clear cut as the myth makes out ? for instance, the right hemisphere is involved in processing some aspects of language, such as intonation and emphasis.

Much of what we know about the functional differences between the hemispheres comes from the remarkable split-brain studies that began in the sixties. These investigations were conducted on patients who?d had the thick bundle of fibres connecting their hemispheres cut as a last-resort treatment for epilepsy. Researchers, including the psychologists?Roger Sperry?and?Michael Gazzaniga, could present stimuli to just one hemisphere or the other at a time, and they discovered that the two halves of the brain acted like independent entities with contrasting processing styles.

It?s also important to note that the kind of tasks that engage one hemisphere more than the other don?t always map neatly onto the kind of categories that we find useful to talk about in our everyday lives. Let?s take the example of creativity. We may find it a useful shorthand to divide tasks up into those that are creative and those that are repetitive. But the reality of course is more complex. There are many ways to be creative.

Some studies have indeed shown that the right hemisphere seems to be involved more when we have an Aha! flash of insight. For instance,?one study?found that activity was greater in the right hemisphere when participants solved a task via insight, rather than piecemeal.?Another showedthat brief exposure to a puzzle clue was more useful to the right hemisphere, than the left, as if the right hemisphere were nearer the answer.

Why The Left-Brain Right-Brain Myth Will Probably Never Die

But insight is just one type of creativity. Telling stories is another. One of the most fascinating insights from the split-brain studies was the way the left hemisphere made up stories to explain what the right hemisphere was up to ? what Gazzaniga dubbed the ?interpreter phenomenon?. For example, in one study, a patient completing a picture-matching task used their left hand (controlled by the right hemisphere) to match up a shovel with an image of a snow storm (shown only to the right hemisphere). The patient was then asked why he?d done this. But his left hemisphere (the source of speech) didn?t admit to not knowing. Instead, it confabulated, saying that he?d reached for the shovel to clear out the chicken coup (the picture shown to the left hemisphere was of a bird?s foot).

Writing an overview of the split-brain research in a 2002 article for Scientific American (pdf), Gazzaniga concluded, based on the interpreter phenomenon and other findings, that the left hemisphere is ?inventive and interpreting?, whilst the right brain is ?truthful and literal.? This seems at odds with the myth invoked by Rabbi Sacks and many others.

I suppose the logical left-brain, creative right-brain myth has a seductive simplicity about it. People can ask ? which kind of brain have I got? They can buy an app to target their weaker half. They can categorise languages and people as right-brained or left. It?s tricky to combat that belief system by saying the truth is really more complicated. But it?s worth trying, because it would be a shame if the simplistic myth drowned out the more fascinating story of how our brains really work.

Correction: Pet Goat-Tennessee story

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) ? In a story Aug. 29 about a pet goat violating East Ridge livestock ordinances, The Associated Press reported erroneously the owner surname. The owners are the Viar family, not Vlar.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Oreo the goat living outlaw's life in Tennessee

Officials say Tenn. city may grant exception for family ? or else Oreo the pet goat must go

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) ? Not wanting to be the people who got Jeff Viar's goat, city council members in a Tennessee city will consider an exemption for the animal.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/QSm47l) reports the issue is whether a black and white pigmy goat named Oreo can remain in East Ridge as Viar's pet.

City Manager Tim Gobble says there's no question Oreo is cute. But he also says the city must either enforce its "no livestock" ordinance or find an alternative.

Jeff and Samantha Viar say they didn't know keeping Oreo was against the law when they got him for their children a year ago.

Mayor Brent Lambert is sympathetic. He has kids, too ? the human kind ? and says the city is willing to look at a narrow exception for Oreo.

Marketing On The Internet: Tips For Making The Web Work For Your ...

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Always look for ways to garner feedback from your site?s visitors. This plays a role in how successful your business is. Get as many people as you can to give you their honest thoughts. Take their advice into consideration prior to changing anything you deem necessary.

TIP! Offer free content to your visitors and you will get more traffic. This Internet marketing strategy allows you to package your free course with related products that people will buy.

Sometimes, we come up with ideas that would make a great business. Thankfully, the Internet is a place in which these ideas can be set to reality, assisting you in building your business. If you are seeking some marketing help, then continue on to the article below.

Do not spend a lot of money on ads. Shop around for the best deals, and don?t waste money on something that isn?t beneficial to your business. Banner advertising will give you an appropriate return on your investment in the long term.

TIP! If sending emails to your customers and possible customers is one of your online marketing strategy, be sure to move the links that are included in the emails you send. Emails that are always the same are the ones that are most often ignored.

Do you have a company slogan or a statement of purpose? If so, list it in a prominent place on your website. This will help make your site more recognizable and help your customers know what you and your website are all about. Doing this is a great way to bring attention to services that you offer.

Think about bundling your merchandise with products of the same type and offering the bundle as a bargain sale. Make sure that the terms of what you?re offering are clearly stated and easy to find.

TIP! You can assess the results of online marketing campaigns with sophisticated programs that measure the sales versus the number of visitors to your site. There are a variety of online tools that you can use to analyze your success.

A great way to participate in link-sharing or advertising in general is to have a professional-looking ?Advertise with Us? badge built on your site. Let people know you would appreciate it if they shared a link to your content on their site or if they shared your content on social networks.

In order to persuade your visitors to purchase a product, refer them to a page that will show them content concerning the product an example would be a video. They will feel like they know more about what they are buying. When you do this you show them the value of a product, and they don?t feel like you are just trying to sell them random stuff.

TIP! Try to encourage your customers to buy quickly by offering discounts or incentives. Some popular incentives that other marketers offer include free shipping and free wrapping services.

One way to market your business online would be to create a website that covers all public relations issues. High quality content may end up in online newspapers and magazines. It is relatively simple to do, and is an excellent way of promoting your business.

Sometimes webmasters forget the benefit of keeping websites clean and simple. Multimedia tools like Silverlight and Flash are cool and seductive to new website owners. Flashy website tools like these, offering full screen video, are pushed all the time by website designers. Wise webmasters remember that using specific technologies renders their websites useless to some prospects. A well designed website that encourages business finds a way to be fully functional, even without the latest shiny and flashy features.

TIP! Plump your website with interesting and vital content. The content should attract search engine attention as well as offer content that your audience appreciates.

When experimenting with the text you will use for your website, try out different emphasis tools. You can make words and phrases stand out by underlining them, italicizing them or making them bold. Use of these fonts can help convey messages to your readers, as well as help organize the appearance of your article.

Consider having a discussion forum so that customers can leave messages for you and chat with each other. Your website will be like a group instead of just a place where items can be purchased. It is natural for people to want to be part of a group, and if you give them that feeling, they are more likely to return to your site.

TIP! Find your niche. This will be great at driving lots of traffic towards your site when people go searching for this product.

Consider using phrases such as ?special addition? in your advertisements. People generally want to own items which are exclusive, so using these phrases in your marketing materiel can tempt people to purchase your product quickly.

Create a FAQ page to advertise products. Offer an answer to each question, and mention products you offer as a solution to the problem when it is appropriate. Come up with questions that answer a customer?s thoughts without being too obvious that you are using your products to do it.

TIP! Make the most of your website if you want to effectively market it. Make sure that your site is easy to read, contains engaging information and answers to questions visitors may have.

Put yourself in the shoes of your potential customers, and think about what they might expect upon visiting your site. Providing what your customers desire can increase the chance that they will purchase. Ask people you trust for opinions on your website. Ask friends or family members about some of the things that you can improve. Make adjustments as you go along until your site is as effective as possible.

It can be a difficult job to choose your business direction for your website. You should list your interests and select the top few to see which interest will be the direction you will take with your business. You should be interested in what you will be marketing. It is much easier to market a website if you have a concrete goal in mind.

TIP! One absolute Internet marketing necessity is information security. You need to take every possible step to protect your customers? information when they buy from you.

Make sure you keep good records. This information should encompass traffic, conversions, sales, refunds and anything else that is measurable. Keeping detailed statistics will help you decide the proper action to take when it comes to Internet marketing because you will know what works and what does not.

Everything you say about your products or services should be true. Be believable in your claims and try to demonstrate the benefits of what you are promoting with a video, so that customers can see for themselves. This is why it is so important to sell products that you have used yourself.

TIP! Promote your business through other popular sites online. With the right investment, you can get your company and your products seen by a vast audience.

As stated previously, the ultimate goal of any business should be longevity. You most likely want to be in business for years and years. Use these hints to get your started with internet marketing

Normally, you shouldn?t mix business and pleasure, but this is an exception. If you think of your enterprise as a profitable hobby, there is significantly less pressure. It is a good idea to make this something that you and your spouse can do together.?

Legal Fight with Florida Unions Costs Taxpayers Nearly $500,000 ...

Most people would be thankful if they only had to pay three percent of their salary toward retirement. That would be considered a gift in the private sector. But to Florida?s government employees, it?s a crime and an insult. That?s why the unions have filed a lawsuit, forcing the Florida Department of Management Services to rack up a whopping $499,288 in legal fees (thus far) to defend a new law requiring government employees to pay a paltry three percent towards their state pensions. Unsurprisingly, the unions won the first round in court. There is always a politically-friendly judge ? perhaps even one on the union donor list ? ready to lend a hand in a time of crisis. Now the state?s Supreme Court will decide the matter. The unions, led by the Florida Education Association, successfully argued that making employees pay anything ?violated the contract between the state and current employees.? But the unions weren?t done. The FEA have also filed a lawsuit challenging new laws dictating how teachers are evaluated and compensated. That case has yet to be heard in court, but the state has already spent $3,354 on legal fees and the meter continues to run. Not only do unions make public schools very expensive to operate, but they also make any type of pro-student reform very expensive to implement. Perhaps heavily unionized governments should adopt the motto: ?Damned if you reform, damned if you don?t.?

Budgeting for Dummies : Ideas for Women Money and Finance Blog

Every once in a while, it just makes sense to go back to the basics, which in finances involves budgeting. Businesses use budgets and so should you in your personal home finances.

But sometimes budgeting is made so complicated that we dread the thought. I am going to break it down a little to make it easier to understand and hopefully in doing so, you will understand why you need it.

A budget is simply a list of your expenses and your income. By detailing these expenses, you get to see how much you are spending versus how much that you are making.

There are a few reasons to keep a budget. First, even if you update your checkbook on a regular basis, it can be hard to see your whole financial picture. A budget can show you where you are spending your money and help you to determine if you are spending it in areas that you should not be.

Second, a budget can show you if you simply are not making enough money and if you are running a deficit every month.

Third, a budget allows you to set allowable amounts for certain discretionary expenses, like travel, entertainment, dining out, purchases, etc.

And finally, a budget flows with you and can change and be altered over time and as needed, so it is continually useful and applicable.

Even though a budget can feel restrictive, it is actually a means for you to gain control over your financial situation (remember yesterday?s post about numbers?). Embrace it and enjoy the order that a budget can bring.

For an easy way to learn about budgeting, check out this recent LearnVest article entitled Budgeting 101.

PFT: Seahawks name Wilson Week 1 QB starter

Carolina Panthers v New York JetsGetty Images

Jets fans were booing.

And they had every right. After paying full fare for tickets, and parking, and (hopefully) beer, they were forced to watch the Jets offense.

But at least the Jets are consistent.

Even after getting a turnover and a short field (taking over at the Panthers 12-yard line), the Jets starting offense continued to pitch a shutout in the preseason, failing to get into the end zone.

If you?re scoring at home (and they?re not, or on the road either), that?s 15 possessions for the starters in the preseason, and no touchdowns. The backups haven?t scored either, leaving no hope that personnel changes are going to fix things.

While it?s easy to rail on quarterback Mark Sanchez, it?s misguided as well, as he suffered through several dropped passes.?They actually looked competent early in the game running no-huddle, but that didn?t last long.

But Sanchez was unnecessarily glib on the sidelines, joking with Michelle Tafoya that they were saving all their touchdowns for the regular season.

For it to have been funny, there would have to be an expectation this wasn?t actually what they are.

The good news is the Jets defense was strong.

It better be.

Here are some other things we learned on Sunday Night Football.

1. There were cheers when Tim Tebow took the field.

I?m not sure anymore if they were sarcastic or sincere.

Of course, when he got a few plays under his belt, they were booing him too. Those were sincere.

The Jets night in a nutshell was when he jumped up to celebrate a surprising first-down scramble, and a few plays later, threw an ugly pick.

End well, this will not.

2. Cam Newton can make plays even without a gaudy stat line.

He was a positively Tebowian 6-of-15 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown, and ran twice for 16 yards.

But he makes the Panthers offense move.

They don?t want him to run as much on purpose this year, but the threat of him making a decision on a zone read is enough to freeze opponents for a second and buy time for him to do something else with it.

3. There should have been more cheers for Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, playing his first preseason game since his surgery to repair his third torn ACL.

Davis has incredible gifts, or had them before his knee was shredded. He can still run well, and the Panthers are going to spot him in rather than try to ask him to play every snap.

As a blitzer and a guy who can drop back and cover tight ends, he?s still good.

But they?ll probably never stop holding their breath every time he hits the ground.

4. The Jets offense has problems, but they are not without players on that side.?Problem is, they?re all getting hurt.

Tight end Dustin Keller left the game early with a hamstring problem, and then backup Josh Baker was take off with a right knee injury.

Whether it?s Sanchez or Tebow, the Jets need safe passes. And without a solid tight end out there (or even his backup), they have issues.

They should sign Jeremy Shockey, for comic relief if nothing else.

5. Not a banner night for the Panthers highly paid stable of running backs.

DeAngelo Williams fumbled twice, Jonathan Stewart was hauled off on a cart with an ankle injury, and Mike Tolbert was on the bench with a bag of ice on his knee.

Armond Smith and Josh Vaughan are up for contract extensions next.

6. The Jets got consistent pressure up front from their starting defense.

Quinton Coples and Muhammad Wilkerson in particular got a good push on a Panthers line that?s at least above average and may be very good.

They?re going to be asked to carry a team, and they may be able to.

7. The Panthers have apparently elected to go with slow and steady over athletic ability at free safety.

Former Ravens backup Haruki Nakamura (who was stuck behind some guy named Ed Reed) got the start and took all the work with the first offense.

Former second-round pick Sherrod Martin, who unlike Nakamura has range, is now a bench warmer.

This was initially a competition, but it appears the Panthers have made their decision. Martin?s such a better athlete it?s comical, but he had a series of gaffes in coverage last year that even had the owner cracking on him.

Basically, they?re electing to go with a limitation they can plan on rather than guessing where the more talented Martin will be.

8. The Panthers offense wasn?t very good either. But unlike the Jets, they had a reason.

Without wide receiver Steve Smith, the Panthers offense is completely different. He?s the vertical threat that makes everything else work.

The good news is, he?s going to be OK after dealing with an infection in his foot.

Easy Tips To Help You Effectively Deal With Credit Cards

Using credit cards wisely can help you accumulate points that can be used on incentives like vacations. It can also relieve any stress you may have. People who fail to use credit cards intelligently end up with nothing but more bills. You would be wise to continue reading so you can get some great ideas about how to find the best cards and how to utilize those you already have in the right way.

Keep a close watch on your balance. You should also be sure to know that you are aware of the limit that your creditor has given you. If you exceed your limit, then the fees are going to add up making your balance a lot harder to pay off. Exceeding the limit also means taking more time to pay off your balance, increasing the total interest you pay.

Never use a public computer to make online purchases with your credit card. Public computers in coffee shops and public libraries could store your information, ready for a thief to retrieve and use it. You will be inviting trouble if you go ahead and do that. Don?t make purchases from another person?s computer.

It is important that you have a good credit score if you desire a good credit card. Credit card companies use those credit scores for determining the cards to offer customers. Low interest credit cards, cash back incentives, and best points options are offered to those with great credit scores.

Closing your account isn?t enough to protect against credit fraud. You also need to cut your card up into pieces and dispose of it. If you choose to put it in a drawer, the card could find itself in another person?s hands, and he or she could use your information to open up your account and charge lots of debt that is in your name.

Don?t ever let anyone borrow your credit card. Even if it is a great friend of yours, that should still be avoided. It may lead to large fees if your friend spends more than you authorized.

If you have poor credit, consider getting one of the secured credit cards. A secured card will ensure that you do not spend above your limit. Essentially, you?re borrowing your money and you pay interest on it. Although this arrangement is less than ideal, it can help you repair your credit. Just remember that you still need to ensure the company you?re dealing with is honest. After some time the company may present you with an unsecured credit card offer later which will help improve your credit score greatly.

It is not wise to always choose your credit card instead of your debit card just because you are trying to collect rewards or frequent flyer miles. If you charge your purchases onto a single card just because you want free airline tickets, you could get them. Unfortunately, you?re also very likely to be forced to pay interest rate payments that end up costing you more than the plane tickets.

Create a budget for your credit cards. Your income is already budgeted, so make sure you make an allowance for credit card payments within this. Never look at a credit card as more money. Know how much you have allotted each month and keep a close eye on your spending to ensure you stick to it. Do not spend more than that, and at the end of the month, pay it off.

It is time to put your credit cards away when your monthly bills start to get tough to handle. If you don?t do this, serious financial problems might follow. That is the case for individuals around the world. They try to make up for a financial shortfall with their credit cards. This can lead to a painful bankruptcy. You need to use your income and not your credit cards to pay for your living expenses and monthly bills.

You can still benefit greatly from even the most basic card that offers no perks. Using these strategies can help you enjoy your credit cards, without the stresses sometimes associated with their usage. Apply the advice you now know from the above article so that you can fall in the group that you want to become a member of.

How To Manage Your Credit Cards And Stay Out Of Debt

Credit cards can be a great help in your life for helping your manage your finances. Not only are they good for building good credit, but they also can give you a backup plan, in case of times where you incur unintended financial burdens. Check out this article for great information about credit cards.

We highly recommend you Compare Credit Cards in order for you to find the best information on bad credit gas credit card

As a general rule, you should avoid applying for any credit cards that come with any type of free offer. More often than not, anything that you get free with credit card applications will always come with some sort of catch or hidden costs that you are sure to regret later on down the road.

You may find it difficult to get your first credit card. Most credit card companies will be stubborn about providing new credit cards to someone without any kind of credit card history. If this continues to be an issue for you, consider looking into a secured credit card account through your bank or credit union.

Make sure that you watch your statements closely. If you see charges that should not be on there, or that you feel you were charged incorrectly for, call customer service. If you cannot get anywhere with customer service, ask politely to speak to the retention team, in order for you to get the assistance you need.

If your credit card company offers to raise your spending allowance, think carefully before you accept. A higher spending allowance on your cards raises your possible debt to income ratio, and that can harm your credit score. If you do not need the higher spending allowance, ask your creditor to keep your balance where it is, instead.

If you are a college student, you may find that you are getting offers for student credit cards. If you are looking to get a credit card, you may want to take one of these companies up on the offer. This will help you to avoid having to apply to multiple companies for a credit card.

Try to avoid applying for in-store credit cards because they charge much higher fees than traditional credit cards. Most merchants accept all of the major credit cards so it would be a much better idea for you to make purchases with one of those instead of applying for a card with the merchant.

Before you decide on a new credit card, be careful to read the fine print. Credit card companies have been in business for many years now, and know of ways to make more money at your expense. Be sure to read the contract in full, before signing to be sure that you are not agreeing to something that will harm you in the future.

After reading this article, you should know what to do and what to avoid doing with your credit card. It can be tempting to use credit for everything, but you now know better and will avoid this behavior. If it seems difficult to follow these tips, remember all the reasons you want to improve your credit card use and keep trying to change your habits.

Adventures in Fatherhood | Happy Valley News Hour

Earlier tonight, we went out to dinner for my daughter?s fourteenth birthday. As is the family tradition, she chose the restaurant. The place she chose has great Belgian fries, and this is the main reason she chose it, as she is a true french fry connoisseur. However, this particular restaurant makes their own ketchup (which she does not like), and they make a point about not having any ?normal? ketchup on hand. We usually get around this by sneaking in ketchup packets for my daughter whenever we go there.

Tonight, however, we forgot the packets, mainly because it was my job to bring them since my wife was meeting us at the restaurant. The look on my daughter?s face when she realized she had no ketchup for her fries at her own birthday dinner was truly heartbreaking. The creamy aioli sauce just wasn?t going to cut it.

There was only one thing to be done. After we?d ordered, I snuck out of the restaurant, walked a block to a burger joint, filled two plastic ramekins with ketchup, and brought them back to the restaurant, where the birthday girl hid them under her napkin until the fries arrived. (Not that the waitress would have cared, but my daughter was sensitive about it.) Birthday dinner saved.

Sometimes it?s the little things that count.

Newer Services and Next-Gen Cable Modem Systems to Increase ...

Newer Services and Next-Gen Cable Modem Systems to Increase Cable Modem Subscriber Base, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

San Jose, California (PRWEB) August 22, 2012

Follow us on LinkedIn ? Internet and broadband connectivity has transformed the manner in which global communications takes place. Broadband, referring to high-speed Internet access along with related devices, applications, networks and content, continues to find adoption at a steady rate among global consumers driven by increasing popularity of bandwidth-specific applications, namely IP telephony services, music file downloads, and viewing online videos. Decreasing prices and growing availability of broadband services all around the world are also contributing to the rapid uptake of broadband Internet services. Several Governments, particularly in Asia, are promoting uptake of broadband Internet by offering subsidies to broadband companies and are improving existing infrastructure. High-speed Internet is the most widely used type of fixed line connection, although wireless technologies are fueling demand in remote regions.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), cable modem, and mobile wireless are among the major broadband technologies across the world. While DSL dominates the global fixed broadband subscriber base, cable broadband and FTTx represent the other major types of fixed broadband technologies. Cable broadband is the second most popular broadband technology in the world following DSL with a 30% of the subscriber base. In recent times, a number of households are exhibiting preference for multiple types of broadband Internet connections.

Cable broadband technology holds an edge over DSL due to its ability to offer services with superior speeds. Cable technology also has an edge over DSL connections in terms of content and services. Multi-Service Operators (MSOs) are focused on adding new and additional equipment and cables to their existing service network to capitalize on the opportunities emerging from the rapid adoption of cable broadband. Several cable companies are adopting DOCSIS 3.0 and Euro-DOCSIS 3.0 specifications, which allow them to upgrade their operations and offer 50 to 200 mbps broadband connectivity to their customers.

As stated by the new market research report on Cable Modem Subscribers, the United States is the single largest cable modem market in the world, in terms of number of subscribers. In the US, cable broadband subscribers outnumber DSL broadband subscribers by a considerable margin. Growing popularity of high-volume data applications, and broadband stimulus plan offered by the US Government bode well for the market?s growth. However, rapid growth is expected from Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific markets. In developing economies, adoption of cable modems is expected to grow significantly driven by rising education and income levels, increasing computerization, rapid urbanization, and growing competition between service providers, which is in turn leading to fall in prices of cable broadband services. Further, broadband market in these countries is expected to benefit immensely from Web 2.0 technology and the rapid expansion of social media networks. Future potential for growth is enormous given the relatively lower broadband penetration rate among households. Latin America represents the fastest growing regional market with a CAGR of 12% over the review period.

Major players profiled in the report include Cablevision Systems Corporation, Charter Communications Inc., Cogeco Cable Inc., Comcast Corporation, Com Hem AB, Cox Enterprises, Hathway, Insight Communications Company Inc., Kabel Deutschland, Liberty Global Inc., Rogers Communications Inc., Shaw Communications Inc., StarHub Ltd., Telstra Corporation Limited, and Time Warner Cable Inc.

Isaac drenches Haiti, Cuba, heads toward Florida

HAVANA (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac pushed over Cuba on Saturday after sweeping across Haiti's southern peninsula, where it caused flooding and at least four deaths, adding to the misery of a poor nation still trying to recover from the terrible 2010 earthquake.

Isaac's center made landfall just before midday near the far-eastern tip of Cuba, downing trees and power lines. In the picturesque city of Baracoa, the storm surge flooded the seaside Malecon and a block inland, destroying two homes.

Forecasters said Isaac poses a threat to Florida Monday and Tuesday, just as the Republican Party gathers for its national convention in Tampa. It could eventually hit the Florida Panhandle as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of nearly 100 mph (160 kph).

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency, officials urged vacationers to leave the Florida Keys and the U.S. National Hurricane Center said a hurricane warning was in effect there, as well as for the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach south to Ocean Reef and for Florida Bay.

At least four people were reported dead in Haiti including a 10-year-old girl who had a wall fall on her, according to the country's Civil Protection Office. There were no immediate details on how the others died.

The government also reported two injuries; "considerable damage" to agriculture and homes; nearly 8,000 people who were evacuated from their houses or quake shelters; and more than 4,000 who were taken to temporary shelters.

Many, however, stayed and suffered.

The Grise River overflowed north of Port-au-Prince, sending chocolate-brown water spilling through the sprawling shantytown of Cite Soleil, where many people grabbed what possessions they could and carried them on their heads, wading through waist-deep water.

"From last night, we're in misery," said Cite Soleil resident Jean-Gymar Joseph. "All our children are sleeping in the mud, in the rain."

Scores of tents in quake settlements collapsed. In a roadside lot in Cite Soleil, the dozens of tents and shelters provided by international groups after the earthquake were tossed to the ground like pieces of crumpled paper, and the occupants tried to save their belongings.

"They promised they were going to build us a sturdy home and it never came," Jean-Robert Sauviren, an unemployed 63-year-old father of six said as he stood barefoot in the water and held aloft his arms. "Maybe we don't deserve anything."

Ricknel Charles, a 42-year-old pastor, sheltered some 50 displaced people in his church.

"This is the only thing I can do for them: give them a place to sleep," Charles said.

About 300 homes in Cite Soleil lost their roofs or were flooded three feet (one meter) deep, according to Rachel Brumbaugh, operation manager for the U.S. nonprofit group World Vision.

Doctors Without Borders said it anticipated a spike in cholera cases due to flooding and it was preparing to receive more patients.

The international airport reopened by the afternoon but there was still extensive flooding throughout Port-au-Prince after 24 hours of steady rain.

Forecasters predicted the storm would likely march up through the Gulf of Mexico and approach the Florida Keys on Sunday, then continue north off the state's west coast as a hurricane on Monday, just as the Republican National Convention is scheduled to start.

Tampa is within the tropical storm watch zone, meaning forecasters believe tropical storm conditions are possible there within the next 48 hours.

Gov. Scott said during a media briefing that delegates were being told how to stay safe during a storm, and officials were ready for storm surge, bridge closures and other problems that could arise during the convention.

After hitting land near the easternmost tip of Cuba on Saturday, Isaac's center spent just a few hours over the island before reemerging into the water, where it was expected to pick up strength.

On Saturday night, the storm was centered about 80 miles (130 kilometers) east-northeast of Camaguey, Cuba, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph), the Hurricane Center reported. It was moving northwest along the Cuban coastline at 20 mph (31 kph).

Tropical storm-force winds extended nearly 205 miles (335 kilometers) from the center, giving Isaac a broad sweep as it passed.

In Baracoa, authorities cut off electricity as a preventive measure. Civil defense officials patrolled the streets and told onlookers to be careful as they gawked at the powerful surf kicked up by the storm. Waves crashing against the seawall sent spray high into the air and deposited rocks and other debris on land.

Dariel Villares and a cousin who lives next door lost their seaside homes.

"A high wave came and knocked down both walls: mine and my cousin's," Villares said. "Now we're removing everything of value."

There were no reports of fatalities, Red Cross worker Javier de la Cruz said.

Flooding was reported in low-lying coastal areas and 230 people were in emergency shelters, according to state TV.

In central Cuba, far to the west of Baracoa, the Sol Cayo Coco beach resort moved guests out of ground floor rooms. Intermittent rains and gusty winds buffeted Havana, 560 miles (900 kilometers) away.

Cuba has a highly organized civil defense system that goes door-to-door to enforce evacuations of at-risk areas, largely averting casualties from storms even when they cause major flooding and significant damage to crops.

Near the island's southeastern tip, the U.S. military suspended ferry service at the Guantanamo Bay naval base and bunked guards inside prison facilities, but operations were returning to normal by late afternoon.

"The bad weather did not materialize here as tropical storm Isaac turned away," Navy Capt. Robert Durand said.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic evacuated nearly 7,800 people from low-lying areas, and at least 10 rural settlements were cut off by flooding, according to Juan Manuel Mendez, director of rescue teams. Power was knocked out in parts of the capital, Santo Domingo.

There were no reports of injuries, but 49 homes across the country were destroyed.

Authorities discontinued a tropical storm warning, but rainfall was expected to reach up to 12 inches (300 millimeters) over the weekend.

"We still have a big cloudy area over the island that will produce lots of rain" until Sunday afternoon, said Francisco Holguin of the local meteorological agency.

Tech Comparison: Dark Souls PC | N4G

Oh dude that was a low blow. Not good not good

I respect From Software and many other smaller devs for what they are trying to do.

Even though the game is not playing well at all on the PC and has control issues and performance issues and hard to figure out menu and interface and such, but under all that a solid game is trying really hard to come through.

I personally will not agree with the price tag for a jittery experience but it does seem like a decent game underneath.

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

You love your gadgets because they're awesome. Or maybe you love them because you spent $500 and decided you'd better learn to like them. Whatever the case, chances are you've learned to forgive their flaws and enjoy them enough as they are, force-quits and all. That about describes this week's IRL, in which three Engadget editors make peace with their imperfect gadgets: an occasionally crash-prone Transformer Prime, the easily scratched V-Moda Crossfade LP headphones and Verbatim's Dual USB Power Pack, with its short little charging cables.

Older dads may raise risk for autism, schizophrenia in kids - 8 News ...

By Carina Storrs
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Men who have kids later in life may pass on more new genetic mutations to their offspring, possibly raising their child's risk of disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, new research suggests.

New mutations arise in the sperm cells of men near the time of conception instead of being passed down through generations. They have been associated with relatively rare cases of non-hereditary autism.

Researchers in Iceland searched the genomes of 78 families for new mutations as they first appeared and looked at how the number of these mutations in children was related to the age of their parents. In most of the families, the child had either non-hereditary autism or schizophrenia.

The study, which was published Aug. 22 in the journal Nature, found that every year a man ages, he is predicted to pass on more than two additional new (or "de novo") mutations. More than 97 percent of these new mutations in children were explained by having an older dad.

"The father is an incredibly important contributor to mutations, and even if de novo mutations happen randomly, the more mutations you have, the more likely you will have one in a gene that matters," said study author Dr. Kari Stefansson, CEO of deCODE Genetics, a genome analysis company based in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Previous research has linked higher rates of spontaneous mutations to older dads based on the sequence of select regions of the genome; this study is the first to make the connection based on data from the entire genome of parents and their children, Stefansson said.

"This study further establishes that paternal age is a risk factor for [non-hereditary] autism," said Daniel Smith, senior director of discovery neuroscience at Autism Speaks, an autism research and advocacy organization.

Although it is not known how many cases are autism are non-hereditary, it is so far only thought to be less than 1 percent of autism cases, Smith said.

The rate of autism spectrum disorder in the United States has been steadily climbing and is now estimated to affect one in 88 children, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Whether [paternal age] accounts for the increased prevalence of autism by itself is very unlikely," Smith said. "It's definitely in the mix as an important risk factor."

The current study of 78 families in Iceland included 44 children with an autism spectrum disorder and 21 children with schizophrenia. In most cases, the parents were not affected by these disorders.

Stefansson and his colleagues analyzed the entire genomes of the parent-child sets for a specific type of mutation called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), which essentially are typos that affect a single letter in the DNA code.

The team found that the number of new mutations was strongly associated with the age of the father, whereas the relationship between mutation rate and maternal age was not statistically significant.

In addition, the data suggest that the age of the father is linked to a steady increase in mutations, instead of reaching a "tipping point" age after which mutations were more likely, Stefansson said.

Men are probably more likely to transmit new mutations to their offspring as they age because their reproductive cells divide and produce sperm throughout their lifetime, and every cell division is an opportunity for genetic errors to be made. In contrast, women are born with their full set of eggs.

The team uncovered new mutations in several genes that have been implicated in autism and schizophrenia, as well as nervous system development and behavioral changes.

The role of new mutations in disease risk is not limited to autism and schizophrenia, and they could contribute to other diseases that have non-hereditary cases, such as epilepsy, Stefansson noted. "It is beginning to look like there is a fairly large number of diseases where the contribution of de novo mutations is going to be significant," he said.

In addition to spontaneous mutations, environmental factors could play a part in non-hereditary autism cases, Smith said, explaining that unknown environmental factors, which older men have had more time to be exposed to, could promote genetic errors during sperm production.

Even though the rate of new mutations increases in children with age of the father, this should not be an argument for older men to avoid procreating or for younger men to freeze their sperm, Stefansson said.

"We don't know how large a percentage of cases of autism and schizophrenia are caused by de novo mutations," he explained. "The risk is not huge."

"On a grander scale, in the context of our species, the increasing mutation rate increases diversity when we are evolving," Stefansson said. "Getting rid of extra mutations might make us as a species less fit to survive the next natural disaster."

"This study should not be used as guidance for parents," Smith said. "Many cases of autism are from parents in their 20s."

HUGE SUMMER CLEARANCE SALE | Branford Sports ...

Darksiders II

When I turned nine, my mom and I had the death talk. She explained to me that death was out of human control and that, without it, there would be no life (pretty heady stuff for a nine year old, if you ask me). My mom clearly hadn't played Darksiders II ?because if she had she would know that anyone can now control Death in the latest action-adventure installment by Vigil Games and THQ Inc.

War and Death: What does it all mean?!
Darksiders II puts gamers in an experience parallel to the 2010 original, except instead of playing as War of the Apocalyptic Horsemen you take control of his brother Death. While in the Horseman's weighty boots, you take Death through the post-mortem of humanity as he looks to expunge allegations about War, pre-maturely starting the events that would inevitably eradicate mankind. Death attempts to defy the Charred Council, the governing body that controls the balance of the universe, by going out and exploring the Nether Realms for proof of his brother's innocence. Along the way, he encounters monsters, giants, and demons that will help or hinder him in this world hovering between Heaven and Hell. I played the Xbox 360 version of Darksiders II, but the game is also currently available for PS3 and PC, with a future Wii version pending.

With obvious nods to some of the most influential games in the past 20 years (i.e. The Legend of Zelda, Prince of Persia, God of War, etc.), Darksiders II has the makings of an instant classic. However, this enjoyable game often falls short in connecting with gamers on any long-term personal and/or original level. Players are bound to be irritated by the game's inability to advance beyond the plot's superficiality. As cool as it sounds on paper, there are definitely moments of boredom, apathy, and repeateded button tapping during cut scenes. Despite such flaws, Darksiders II is a major attempt to create a platform that combines the excitement of some of the best innovations in gameplay all under one hood, a commendable undertaking.

Reaping the Land
In this world, players combine brawny button-mashing with dungeon puzzle-solving in an experience that provides plenty of fun and frustration. At the beginning of the game, players can choose among easy, medium, and hard difficulty levels. With a sprawling interactive landscape that is more than double the size of the 2010 original, the map of Darksiders II is definitely a key selling point, though much of the game's real estate is simply empty plains. Also, every time you cross the threshold into a new area you have to endure a 10-to-15 second loading screen. On the other hand, Darksider II's campaign mode is three times as long as the original's (not counting loading screens).

Death wields two forms of weaponry: The standard quick melee weapon and the stronger yet slower secondary weapon. Players can purchase new abilities, attacks, and weaponry (as in most standard action-adventure games) by obtaining coins through extinguishing foes and finding stray packages along their journey. Death has the potential to harness quite an arsenal of attacks, ranging from summoning demons to taking the form of a giant cloaked reaper. Of the basic maneuvers, I suggest getting acquainted with countering and dodging because you'll need them if you plan on getting far with any of the game's bosses. Plus, seeing a character you're controlling do acrobatic feats while pinpointing a perfect swing with his axe into the face of some monster is an accomplishment in itself.

Although some of the missions are repetitive, I think the slight deviations from one level to the next are what makes the gameplay appealing. After all, remedial-errand-boy-routines are basically the glue for action-adventure games. Missions mainly consist of obtaining X amount of an item for a character, finding someone for information or battle, and exploring dungeons. The biggest problem I found in the gameplay, though, is the AI. Frankly, I don't like encountering baddies who glitch out and walk into walls or get caught behind objects, because it ruins the game's fluidity.

A 'Scythe' to Watch
I have met quite a number of people who are not fans of bombastic (often comic or cartoonish) art in videogames, famously seen in the Fable series. With its deep shadowing, Darksiders II is definitely an offshoot of this. The graphics also stutter a bit, depending on where the camera is situated. The cut scenes are sometimes a bit contrived, but they do serve their basic purpose in expounding upon the talented developers' art skills as well as connecting loose ends in the story.

As for the sound, the voice acting is fair, but the accompanying score is easily forgotten and ignored. I wound up just turning on my own music to appropriate the mood more to my liking.

In the End of Ends
In the end, Darksiders II provides basic single-player hack and slash fun. Along with its campaign mode, Darksiders also has online capabilities, despite serving mainly as just a stat sheet among friends more so than anything else. The glitchy AI and weak story definitely undercut this game. In the end, I suggest taking Darksiders II for what it is: a button-mashing, dungeon-exploring ride that's good for some instant gratification.
