DARPA's PetProto robot climbs, gauges, jumps, comes to get you

While Boston Dynamics' Cheetah has already premiered, speeding along on its robot-friendly treadmill, we've now got a better glimpse at how the similarly DARPA-funded human-hunting obstacle-scaling Atlas fares, courtesy of its ancestor. That's the Pet-Proto you can see in the video below, balancing and leaping across narrow terrain, conducting its own "autonomous decision-making" and keeping upright -- all very important points for DARPA's own Robotics Challenge, a competition where winners will gain access to their very own modified version of the Atlas for future disaster response tests. Watch the Pet-Proto gradually advance towards camera right after the break. And we'll sleep with one eye open.

In emails to UK police, Anonymous seeks solidarity

(AP) ? The online movement known as Anonymous has made an unusual appeal to British police: "Stand with us."

Authorities said Thursday that the cyber rebels apparently broke into a forum called UKPoliceOnline to steal officers' email addresses, which they used to distribute a manifesto to current and former members of British law enforcement.

"We know that most of you are working-class people, like the majority of us, and that you too have mortgages, student loans, or your children do, and other debts as well. Don't defend the traitors against us, your fellow citizens," the message read in part. "We offer you our hands in friendship. Join us."

Anonymous is an amorphous, Internet-based insurgency responsible for a slew of cyberattacks against law enforcement websites, so the tone of its latest missive was something of a departure from previous practice.

Geoff Hyams, the managing director of The NSI Group, which runs UKPoliceOnline, described the messages as sober and thoughtful. "It was almost like a recruitment-type email," he said.

It's unclear how successful the recruitment drive will be.

London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement that it was investigating how Anonymous obtained the officers' email addresses.

Facebook's progress in mobile wins it friends on Wall Street

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc's shares were set to open about 25 percent higher on Wednesday after its quarterly results showed a surprising jump in revenue from mobile advertising, easing concerns that the company was having trouble capitalizing on soaring use of smartphones and tablets.

Several brokerages raised their price targets on Facebook shares, which have plunged since the company went public on May 18. Barclays Capital raised its target to $26 from $23, while Jefferies & Co raised its to $32 from $30.

Facebook shares, priced at $38 in their initial public offering, closed at $19.50 on the Nasdaq on Tuesday.

Facebook said on Tuesday it now gets 14 percent of its advertising revenue from mobile ads, a far bigger increase than mostly skeptical analysts had expected.

Over time, Facebook's growing expertise in mobile advertising, combined with more user data, will drive mobile monetization for the company, Colin Sebastian, an analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co, wrote on a note.

Sebastian has a "outperform" rating on the stock and a price target of $32.

Needham & Co analyst Laura Martin said Facebook had opportunities to increase branded advertising revenue as top brands increase their association with the company in some form.

Martin, who has a "buy" rating on the stock and a price target of $25, noted that more than 50 percent of Facebook's monthly active users in September accessed Facebook with mobile devices.

Facebook's advertising revenue increased by 36 percent to $1.09 billion in the third quarter.

Facebook had a painful trading debut in May as investors fretted about its slowing revenue growth and the large pool of additional shares set to hit the market as "lock-up" restrictions on employee share sales expired.

Analysts said the lock-up period expiry remained a near-term concern, but the company' newly proven ability to monetize its overall advertising model could allay those concerns.

'Chuck Jones Automotive & RV: Why Is My Check Engine Light On ...

The Check Engine Light strikes fear into the hearts of some in Vancouver, WA and is totally ignored by just as many. Just what it means is a mystery to most Vancouver, WA drivers.

Let?s get the urgency issues out of the way first. If your vehicle?s check engine light is flashing, that means that something is wrong that could cause severe engine damage. Naturally, Vancouver, WA drivers should get that taken care of right away at Chuck Jones Automotive & RV.

If your check engine light is flashing, you shouldn?t drive at Vancouver, WA highway speeds, tow or haul heavy loads. Take it easy all the way to your Vancouver, WA service center.

If the light is glowing steadily, Vancouver, WA auto owners should keep an eye on it for a day or two. If the light doesn?t go off, schedule an appointment with Chuck Jones Automotive & RV to get it checked out.

An explanation on how the Check Engine Light works may be informative. Most of your vehicle engine functions are controlled by a computer, not surprisingly, called an engine control computer. The computer is able to adjust many engine parameters for environmental conditions, engine condition and even the way you drive in Vancouver, WA.

In order to make these adjustments, the computer relies on a network of sensors to provide data. The computer knows the proper operating range for each sensor. When a sensor reading is out of range the computer runs some tests and may turn on the Check Engine Light.

A simple example is a loose or missing gas cap. This may cause one of the sensors to read out of range. The vehicle?s computer doesn?t know if it?s a serious condition that caused the reading or just a loose gas cap, so it stores a trouble code and turns on the Check Engine Light.

Now when you tighten up the gas cap the sensor readings will be in the correct range. The computer will keep checking on the report for a day or two. Since a bad reading didn?t come up again, it turns off the Check Engine Light. The computer will also try to make adjustments to compensate for some readings. If it can do so, it?ll then turn off the Check Engine Light. If the problem can?t be resolved then the light will remain on and you should get your vehicle looked at at Chuck Jones Automotive & RV.

Your Chuck Jones Automotive & RV technician will plug a scanner into the on-board diagnostic port and read the trouble code stored in the computer. The trouble code will give the Chuck Jones Automotive & RV technician a starting place as he diagnoses the cause of the problem.

At Chuck Jones Automotive & RV in Woodland WA (98674) we install quality NAPA replacement parts. Give us a call at (360) 225-1580. To learn more about NAPA AutoCare, visit www.NAPAAutoCare.com.

TV stations getting rich from misleading Super PAC ads, watchdog group says

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Television stations are getting rich by airing political ads from Super PACs and other outside groups that station officials know are misleading, a Washington public interest watchdog group charged Thursday.

In an e-mail blast, the watchdog group Free Press asked the public to protest the broadcast industry's refusal to check facts in ads sponsored by independent political groups during the current election cycle.

Some political analysts project that TV stations will reap more than $3.3 billion in political ad revenue by election day next month, with up to half of that projected to be chipped in by Super PACs and other groups with no direct affiliation with the candidates.

The watchdog Center for Responsive Politics says that, as of October 18, there were 942 Super PACs, and those groups had spent a total of $393 million.

One of the biggest Super PACs, Restore Our Future, which supports Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, had spend $97.3 million as of October 18, the center said.

Priorities USA Action, which supports President Obama's re-election campaign, had spent $44.3 million as of October 18, the center said.

Under the law, broadcasters are legally obliged to run ads from political candidates themselves, even when those spots include blatant falsehoods. But the law says that broadcasters can reject deceptive ads from Super PACs and other groups not directly affiliated with candidates.

"The problem is not a lot of stations are doing that," Timothy Karr, Free Press senior director of strategy, told TheWrap.

To combat the misinformation, Free Press is asking the public to weigh in, and Free Press has volunteered to deliver the messages to the Big 4 TV network affiliated stations in the top 50 markets, where most of the political ad dollars are being spent.

"Our campaign hopes to convince stations to do the right thing by connecting them with many of the outraged viewers in their markets," Karr told TheWrap.

Dennis Wharton, a spokesman for the National Association of Broadcasters, declined to comment to TheWrap.

Under a landmark 2010 Supreme Court decision, Super PACs are allowed to raise and spend as much money as they like during campaigns - as long as they don't contribute money directly to the candidates.

(AP) ? Investigators are learning more about the 32-year-old Washington state tattoo artist who wounded an unarmed Canadian border guard and then killed himself ? but they're still trying to find out why.

Canadian officials said Wednesday that Officer Lori Bowcock was on her way to a full recovery. She was shot in the neck Tuesday afternoon at a busy U.S.-Canada crossing north of Seattle.

Andrew Michael Crews of Seattle was driving a van into Canada when he fired at Bowcock in her booth, then turned the gun on himself, authorities said. Crews died at the scene.

His stepfather, Danny Lupinek of Henderson, Nev., said Wednesday that Crews texted his mother hours before the shooting to say he loved her ? and was sorry.

Lupinek said Crews didn't explain what he meant in his text, and the family was unable to reach him after that. He said Crews had given no indication he was upset or headed to Canada.

"This investigation remains in the early stages and investigators are attempting to determine a motive," Superintendent Kevin Hackett of the British Columbia homicide investigation team handling the probe said Wednesday.

"The current evidence clearly indicates that prior to taking his own life, Mr. Crews deliberately fired at the victim," Hackett said in a statement. "There is no evidence, however, to suggest the victim was specifically targeted."

He did not elaborate.

The investigation team was treating the case as an attempted murder.

Agents with Homeland Security Investigations were assisting British Columbia authorities by following leads on the U.S. side of the border, said Andrew Munoz, spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Bowcock remained hospitalized Wednesday in British Columbia.

"She is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery," Roslyn MacVicar, the Canada Border Services Agency's Pacific regional director, said in a statement. "Her mother and brothers are by her side."

Bowcock worked as a civilian dispatcher at police headquarters in London, Ontario, until last spring. As a new border guard, she had not yet completed training that would allow her to carry a gun, the Border Services Agency said.

Crews had lived in the Bremerton area but recently moved to the Seattle area.

Friends said Crews had worked at a Lucky Boys tattoo parlor in Silverdale, near Bremerton, and Lupinek confirmed that his stepson had worked as a tattoo artist. Lucky Boys' phone rang unanswered late Wednesday.

"He's nice. He's just really down to earth," tattoo client Courtnee Riggs told KOMO-TV of Seattle. "He seemed normal and happy and liked punk rock. It's just crazy."

KING-TV reported Crews also had worked at Under the Needle Tattoo in Seattle. A man who answered the phone there declined to comment.

Several TV stations talked with Keith Munyon of Marysville, Wash., identified as a cousin of Crews.

"It doesn't make sense to me," Munyon told reporters, adding his cousin seemed like "a loving guy" and "mellow-mannered."

Immediately after the shooting, officers swarmed the scene and closed the Peace Arch border crossing as they interviewed witnesses and searched for clues. Investigators blocked off the area around Bowcock's booth with yellow crime-scene tape and examined Crews' white van, which sat with its back doors open revealing a mattress inside.

Kevin McAllister, assistant general manager at the Peace Portal Golf Course, which is adjacent to the border crossing, said an employee and several guests told him they had heard two shots fired.

The Peace Arch border about 100 miles north of Seattle is the third-busiest between the United States and Canada. Last month, it averaged 9,000 U.S.-bound cars a day, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Canadian officials reopened the crossing's southbound lanes Wednesday afternoon. The northbound lanes were scheduled to reopen Thursday.

In the meantime, drivers were diverted to other crossings, including the nearby Pacific Highway crossing, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Mike Milne.

Disabled children 'need support now': ePolitix.com

Bookmark and Share

The RNIB has said that the new regulations for Universal Credit should be amended to protect groups, like families with disabled children, who need additional support now.

An inquiry led by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson found that 100,000 disabled children stand to lose up to ?28 a week and 116,000 disabled people who work will be at risk of losing up to ?40 per week from help towards additional costs of being disabled.

Andy Kaye, Policy and Planning Manager at the RNIB, said:

"The Universal Credit regulations risk artificially separating out the support offered to different households with disabled children. One possible solution would be to amend the regulations so families with a child on at least middle rate DLA care receive the severely disabled child addition. The Government is redirecting support away from children with disabilities and working age adults living on their own to adults in the ESA support group.

"Whilst that is a good objective for the longer-term - and as finances allow - we would prefer to see the regulations amended to protect groups, like families with disabled children, who need additional support now. RNIB also has serious concerns about the claims process and would like to see the Government do more to assist claimants, like those who are blind or partially sighted, who cannot readily or easily make a claim online."

The inquiry found that one in ten families with disabled children affected by the changes feared losing their homes. 83% of disabled adults living alone or with a young carer said they would cut back on food and 80% said they would cut back on the amount they spend on heating. The findings also point to a greatly increased burden on young carers as a result of the changes to the Severe Disability Premium.

Despite the intention of Universal Credit to make work pay, evidence in the inquiry shows that the changes could make it harder for disabled people to remain in work.

Google's Q3 2012 earnings: $14.10 billion in revenue, $2.74 billion in operating income

Google's Q3 2012 earnings $1410 billion in revenue, $274 billion in operating income

In an apparent error, Google's Q3 2012 earnings have gone live smack dab in the middle of the trading day, instead of after the closing bell as expected. Early indications are that the search giant has notched third quarter revenues of $14.10 billion, representing a 45 percent uptick compared to Q3 2011. GAAP operating income in the third quarter of 2012 was $2.74 billion, or 19 percent of revenues, and that would explain the near 10 percent slide in the company's stock price. A year ago Google nailed down $3.06 billion, or 31 percent of revenues, when looking at operating profit; investors were expecting some $10.65 per share, while they got just $9.03 per share. When looking at net income, Q3 2012 saw that figure at $2.18 billion, whereas the company raked in $2.73 billion in the same quarter a year ago. Presently, trading has been halted on the company's stock as the dust settles, but one thing is exceptionally clear: pulling in billions in a single quarter won't go over well with Wall Street if its expectations see you pulling in even more.

Tides of Darkness: Distant Hope [Interest Check]

Image

Decades has passed since War of Distrust, but now the surviving cultists has returned, this time, with an army at their back.
Hope is a distant thing these days... Distant, but not gone.

So I'm working on a new RP which will be set in a high-fantasy setting. It be a group based where I (the GM) will throw event after event at the players, keeping them occupied and entertained.
To give you an idea of the sheer amount of work that is involved, you can look at my previous RP "Gods; A new Age" or Crooked Thoughts' "Even Gods Blood: Divine Wrath"

I'm still working on fleshing out the world, but I'd like to know if anyone woud be interested in this.
