Oil above $94 on US data, hope of EU rate cut

The price of oil rose above $94 per barrel Monday as positive U.S. economic data added to optimism for a rate cut in Europe.

By midday in New York, benchmark crude for June delivery was up 90 cents to $93.90 a barrel, after earlier reaching $94.39.

The U.S. government said Americans spent more in March as their incomes went up. And pending home sales hit their highest level in three years. Traders also think the European Central Bank will cut its benchmark interest rate from the current record low of 0.75 percent to 0.50 percent, in a further attempt to turn around the economy there.

A weaker dollar also helped boost oil prices by making crude priced in dollars cheaper for traders using other currencies. On Monday, the euro was up to $1.3082 from $1.3065 late Friday in New York.

Drivers are still shelling out fewer dollars at the gas pump compared with a year ago. The national average for a gallon of regular is $3.50, compared with $3.82 on this date last year.

Brent crude, which is used to price oil from the North Sea used by many U.S. refiners, was up 24 cents to $103.40 on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 1 cent to $2.82 a gallon.

? Heating oil was flat at $2.86 a gallon.

? Natural gas added 13 cents to $4.36.

Horizon Calendar review: Check the weather at the location of your next appointment

Horizon Calendar by Applause Code is an innovative calendar app that includes natural language parsing, a clean design, intuitive gestures, and forecasted weather associated with each of your events.

Just like the Mac OSX Calendar and the popular iPhone calendar Fantastical, Horizon Calendar uses natural language parsing when adding an event. For example, instead of meticulously adding each detail of your event, you simply type "meeting on tuesday with Rene at Starbucks from 1-2p" and Horizon will fill take care of the rest. It's incredibly fast and incredibly easy.

But Horizon takes it a step further. As you start typing "Starbucks", the locations nearby that match will pop up above the keyboard, so you can select exactly which Starbucks you're meeting at. Choosing one will help Horizon better accurately predict the weather.

Which leads me to Horizon's next awesome feature -- weather! The main view of Horizons simply lists out out your days one after another. With each day on the list, the high/low and an icon representing the weather is displayed. If you tap on the day, more details regarding the weather for each event is shown above the list of events for the day. Scrolling through the weather will scroll through your events and tapping on an event will bring up the event details and edit screen.

Horizon Calendar is also rich with gestures: slide down from the tool bar to bring down the month view, swipe to the left to delete an event, slide down from new event entry to edit the details, and rotate your phone to bring up the yearly calendar. Horizon is also integrated with Check the Weather and will launch the app when tapping the weather icon next to an event.

The good

  • Syncs with native calendar
  • Weather for all events up to 14 days out
  • Natural Language Parsing with Intelligent Lookup
  • Intuitive gestures
  • Clean design
  • Option to show date in icon badge
  • Optional night mode
  • Support for metric system

The bad

  • Only one alarm can be set per event
  • No custom repeat options (only every day, week, 2 weeks, month, and year)
  • Only integrates with Check the Weather. Would love to have more apps to choose from in Settings.

The bottom line

I'm not going to lie; when a developer for Horizon Calendar first contacted me, I thought "great, another calendar app", but I was pleasantly surprised with what it turned out to be. I'm actually very excited about this calendar and a little shocked to admit that it will be replacing Fantastical as my primary iPhone calendar. The addition of more alarms and custom repeat options would make Horizon nearly perfect.

Seriously, if you're looking for a new calendar, definitely give Horizon Calendar a shot.

Navy Blue Angels, Air Force Thunderbirds grounded by budget sequester

Automatic sequester budget cuts mean an end to the 2013 season for the Navy's Blue Angels and the Air Force's Thunderbirds. The real losers may be local economies benefitting from air shows.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / April 28, 2013

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels perform at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland last year. The Navy has cancelled the remaining 2013 performances of its Flight Demonstration Squadron. The Air Force Thunderbirds have cancelled the rest of their shows for the year as well.

Travelers across the US are pleased that furloughs for air traffic controllers have been cancelled. Aside from the usual delays for weather and maintenance problems, that means fewer hours trapped on the tarmac or looking for places to charge smart phones in airport terminals.

But there?s another group of frequent flyers who?ve been grounded by across-the-board budget cuts due to the sequester: Navy and Air Force flight demonstration teams, those aerial hotshots whose main purpose is to enhance public relations, attract new recruits, and reflect patriotism with what?s been bumper-stickered as ?The Sound of Freedom.?

There are plenty of other air shows around the country, such as the ?Vidalia Onion Festival Air Show? in Georgia and the ?Take to the Skies AirFest? in Durant, Okla. They just won?t feature the Air Force Thunderbirds or the Navy Blue Angels flying genuine fighter jets. Or the Army?s Golden Knights parachute team.

All three have cancelled their season.

John Cudahy. president of the International Council of Air Shows tells the Associated Press that about 200 of the nation's 300 air shows have been affected by the federal budget cuts and 60 have already been cancelled. He said more cancellations are expected, and some shows may never come back.

"The worst case is that they either cancel and go out of business, or they don't cancel and they have such poor attendance and they go out of business," he said. Economic impact studies indicate the shows are worth $1 billion to $2 billion nationwide, Cudahy estimates.

"Having the Thunderbirds or the Blue Angels is like having the Super Bowl, it's a household name," Bill Walkup, manager of the Martinsburg, W.V. airport told the AP.

When the Thunderbirds performed there in 2010, the show drew 88,000 people. Without a jet team, the show typically draws 15,000 or fewer. When they learned there?d be no Thunderbirds, organizers cancelled this year?s show.

Thunderbirds spokesman Maj. Darrick Lee said a typical season averages about $9.75 million and the Air Force needs to focus its resources now on its mission in Afghanistan. Team members are still doing local public appearances that have little or no cost, including autograph-signing sessions at schools and other venues.

"Would we prefer to be flying? Of course," Maj. Lee said. But, he added, "We encourage folks to go and have a good time with or without us."

Olympia Circuits' Arno Shield lets Arduino newcomers bring their own board

Olympia Circuits' Arno Shield lets Arduino newcomers bring their own board

While there have certainly been attempts at easing the Arduino learning curve, many of these still demand a new board or simplify just one aspect of a much larger universe. Olympia Circuits' new Arno Shield could help strike a better balance between starting fresh and diving into the deep end. It includes all the buttons, lights and sensors needed for 40-plus educational projects, but grafts on to existing boards such as the company's LeOlympia or an Arduino Uno. Owners don't have to add parts or wires; they just remove the shield once they've learned enough to create their own masterworks. The shield kit won't be cheap when it arrives on May 2nd for $60, but it may prove the real bargain for tinkerers who want a full-fledged Arduino board as soon as the training wheels come off.

Breitling Releases The Emergency II, A Watch That Can Save You If You're Trapped On The Island

Breitling-Emergency-II-1If trapped on a deserted island, you may want to spend months looking for the Pearl Station and figuring out the smoke monster, you could just pull the antenna out of the Breitling Emergency II and call in a rescue party. The original Emergency watch, designed in the 1990s, sent 121.5 MHz signal that could be heard by rescue craft within 100 miles of the watch. The new model also transmits at 406.04 MHz, a frequency that is now monitored by orbiting satellite. The watch can transmit for about 24 hours before the battery dies.

Chris Kluwe: When They Come for You

"Why do you speak out in support of the gay community?"

I've been asked this question multiple times, at multiple events, and every time I give the same answer: "Because it's the right thing to do. Treat others the way you?d like to be treated."

A simple lesson, one we all learn in kindergarten, yet one that so many people seem to forget as they go through life; as they become more preoccupied with greed, narcissism, hate, and selfishness.

Such an easy equation, and yet so difficult for those lacking empathy to solve, unable to put themselves in another person?s shoes, failing to comprehend the complete dickishness of their actions (actions they would not want perpetrated upon themselves), convinced of their own smug superiority as they try to control someone else?s life.

Why do I speak out in support of the gay community?

Because the words, "We should round them all up and send them to an island to die," are absolutely abhorrent to any rational-minded person and should never be uttered by one member of the human race about another.

Why do I speak out in support of the gay community?

Because the actions of bullying, intolerance, and bigotry, actions that have driven (and will continue to drive) young children and adults to suicide, are actions any creature with an ounce of empathy within their soul ought condemn as the twisted depravity they truly are.

Why do I speak out in support of the gay community?

Because I wish to live in freedom, and every time I contemplate that freedom, I am reminded of a poem by Martin Niemoller:

First they came for the communists,

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the socialists,

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me,

and there was no one left to speak for me.

I speak for freedom, even though it is a freedom I currently have. I speak for equality, even though I am currently equal. I speak for justice, even though it is a justice I currently do not need. I speak for gay rights and the rights of every person, no matter their religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual predisposition, or social or economic status, to live free of the chains of oppression and hate, the barbs of ignorance and small minded fear, because that is the life I want to live - a life where I can make my own choices. A life where I can be who I am, not what someone else decides I should be.

TREAT OTHERS THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED. If we do not make this the cornerstone of our society, if we do not understand that infringing on the freedom of consenting adults to live their lives (in whatever fashion that happens to be) is infringing on the freedom of us all, then we will eventually join other society, culture, and civilization that has ever existed, on the trash heap of history marked "Failure" -- brought there by conflicts those civilizations bred into being, conflicts between those lacking empathy and those desirous of freedom.

Why do I speak out in support of gay rights, of all rights to equality?

Because if I don?t, then who will be left to speak for me?

Code Alert: Tynker Wants to Teach Your Child to Tinker With Tech ...

Tynker 2

Krishna Vedati doesn?t want your children to just watch Saturday morning cartoons. He wants them to make their own.

Vedati is the CEO of Tynker, a ?learn to code? platform for kids in third through eighth grade, one of many that have popped up in recent years aimed at parents who think computing skills are critical for their children.

But rather than focus on computer languages like HTML, the Mountain View-based startup teaches kids how to think like a programmer, he said.

?The way I think about programming is just like any other language the kids are learning today,? Vedati said. ?This is just like another language, just a different set of life skills than if you learned French or Spanish.?

Consumer might want what Vedati?s offering, after results from a pilot of Tynker in Bay Area schools over the past year. The startup, which has raised $3.5 million in angel funding, was inundated with 10,000 new requests after openin up to educators nationwide earlier this month, the majority from parents eager to get their hands on a home version of the coding platform.

Vedati estimates that a home-based edition should be ready in the next couple months. However, for now, Tynker is only available to schools. The platform is free for educators, with an option to pay and upgrade to premium.

Vedati?s own son went to a coding camp at Stanford University and, two weeks later, was able to build a Flash player game. Still, Vedati noticed that he had merely learned how to regurgitate the pre-scripted instructions for building the game, without any understanding of programming?s fundamentals.

It got Vedati thinking. How could he and the rest of the Tynker team design a platform that could convey the conceptual logic behind programming to kids in a structured and, more importantly, fun manner? It was the ideal project for Vedati, an engineer turned entrepreneur. He has been coding since his university years in India where his love of video games drew him to field.

?[Kids are] exposed to so much technology,? he said. ?But school hasn?t changed in 50 years, so we thought these kids need a different set of skills for their generation to use the technology to their advantage.?

Tynker 1

With Tynker, kids are introduced to coding through a simple, visual platform that allows its young users to create games and basic animations with nary a line of code in sight. Its drag and drop design is similar to Scratch, another kid-friendly coding language conceived at MIT. One of Tynker?s simplest concepts is animating a character and teaching it how to walk and talk.

?By the time they?re done training the character, they?ve probably learned 20 primitives,? said Vedati. ?Once they get the knowledge of 20 primitives, then they?re asking what else can I do??

In general, Vedati says girls focus on storytelling and characters, while boys gravitate towards designing games. And, in general, the coding projects grow more complex as the children get older. Whereas third graders are happy to make anything they can show their parents, eighth graders want to build multi-level games.

Later down the line, Vedati said he aims to extend Tynker?s reach to high schoolers in a manner that would transition students to a regular programming language, such as JavaScript or Python and he hopes Tynker will help fix the lack of coding courses at schools nationwide.

?Programming is very near and dear to me,? Vedati said. ?I firmly believe that it?s a life skill that anyone can learn and they could put it to use no matter what their interests are whether their interests are history, art ? there?s computation going on in every field.?

Prologue- Rumors of War
The two suns of Terrestria, Celeste and Supernal, began to make their descent into the horizon. They were approaching Equinox, promising some spectacular evenings during the days ahead; but for now the sunsets were normal. In the mountainous country of Tamel, the capital city of Elbin was starting to shut down. Merchants closed down their shops, soldiers returned to their barracks, families retired to their homes, and peasants scavenged for leftover scraps that would suffice for their next meal.

However, the castle was far from being inactive. Deep in its innermost chambers, General Harken stood in front of the table with a grave look on his weathered face, his h??ooves stamping on the ground every once in a while as he spoke.

?Tramice must fall!? He began to the ten or so officers around him. ?They are becoming too powerful! I?m sure you all know that they are trading with the Gorbians for better technology. Their economy is booming, their army is swelling, their warriors are powerful. Everything they try to do is successful! EVERYTHING! They may be friendly enough to us for the time being.? The mighty centaur grunted. ?Tell me, how long will that last?! When they grow strong enough, they will turn and destroy us!?

A man with eagle talons and wings laughed. ?So you?re suggesting we go to war with them now!?

Harken pounded the table with his fist. ?Exactly, Feagle! They are still weak, relatively. Our army is powerful. If we move quickly and strongly enough, they will not be able to withstand our forces!? His black hair swished back and forth as he looked from one officer to the other. ?And I know that you are capable to lead our army to a quick and successful victory!?

The others nodded and agreed with shouts. Harken raised his fist into the air. ?We will not be overpowered by the cursed Tramicites and their powers! We will triumph!?

?Long live Harken and the Tamelines!?

Chapter 1- Tramice

Two days later, rain had overtaken the entire countryside. The Forest of Loom soaked up the rain like a sponge, infusing the grass, trees, bushes, flowers, and everything with green with new energy. King?s Town, the capital of Tramice, was relatively inactive. Stone buildings had lanterns lit inside to keep families warm as old men told of legends and far-off wars.

Psylch sat on the ramparts of the great castle of Tramice, shielding herself from the pounding rain. Holding her hands up, she stopped the rain a few inches above her head, and then let it slide around her. She sighed. This is so boring! Nothing will ever happen while the rain is going down as hard as it is now!

Psylch turned her gaze across the quiet city. ?If only people were out and about, it wouldn?t be so boring! But of course, it?s raining too hard.? Looking up at the rain coming down in sheets, she thought, why don?t they let the Water Controllers take guard duty when the rain is here? They would probably enjoy it. The light coming from windows in the castle made Psylch jealous as they reflected in her green eyes. She sulked out loud, ?Aye, and they?re probably joking with each other and stuffing their faces, and here am I sitting out in the rain.?

?Having a pity party over there, Psylch?? a male voice shouted to her from a ways away. Psylch looked over to the voice?s owner, a man sitting under a ring of fire that he was constantly refueling to keep himself dry.

She scowled. ?And what if I am, Jacobin??

Jacobin shrugged. ?We?re in the same boat, I guess. Hey, would you like some fire? You?re probably cold.?

Psylch?s scowl disappeared as she replied, ?Really? That would be great!?

Psylch walked over to Jacobin slowly, still using her powers to keep dry. Within a couple of minutes she had reached Jacobin, who had a handful of fire ready for her. She pointed to the handful of fire and brought it closer to her.
?Thanks.?

Jacobin nodded. ?No problem.? He noticed the fire above him was swindling and refueled it. As Psylch headed back to her post, she brought both of her hands close to the hovering sphere of flame, and in doing so, let down her shield. In a few seconds her brown hair was soaked and the fire extinguished.

Jacobin?s reedy baritone rang out in laughter. ?For a Mind Controller, I would think that you?d know better than that, Psylch. I mean, I?m a Fire Controller and I knew about that.?

Quickly blocking the rain again, the scowl returned. He held up his hands in defense. ?Hey, it was a joke.? He formed another handful of fire. ?Here. You?ll need it for sure now.?

Psylch walked back and took the fire from Jacobin. He winked. ?Now, remember, just use one hand and-? before he could finish Psylch quickly gave him a small shove.

?Whoah!? The flames above him disappeared, he stumbled backwards, and his foot slipped. His waist struck the top of the wall, and he began to tumble over the side of the wall. Psylch gasped. ?Jacobin!? She reached out, trying to grab him as he fell. Her arms were just short, brushing his tunic, but unable to grasp it. As she lunged forward, Jacobin plummeted over the wall with a yell!

?No!? Psylch withdrew her arm, watching, and Jacobin suddenly stopped falling. She gasped. ?Wh-what?? she moved her arms like she were pulling a rope, and Jacobin floated back up. Jacobin looked up at Psylch. ?How are you doing that? I didn?t think you were able to manipulate humans!?

Once Jacobin was back on the wall safely, she trembled. ?I-?I didn?t know that either. At least you?re safe.?

Jacobin looked down over the wall and shuddered. ?Yeah? just don?t ever do that again!? he remade the ring of fire over his head, making it lower so he could dry himself off.

Psylch walked back to her post, without fire and with a lot to think about.
***

Phireem walked into a clearing in Loom Forest along with Faire, an old man with white hair but blue eyes that were still sparkling with energy. Faire walked briskly ahead of Phireem, saying, ?Ah, here we are!? He was wearing a waterproof covering, as was Phireem, so the pounding rain did little to affect either.

Phireem, a younger man with black hair and equally bright blue eyes, patted the plastic poncho-like covering as he followed Faire. ?Gorbian technology is certainly some of the most convenient things I have ever seen. Ah, I think I see what you wanted to show me.? Phireem pointed to a blue mist-like aura.

?Yes, exactly, Phireem. This is the portal, only visible to Fire Controllers such as you and me. It is very mysterious, but I have been able to gain much knowledge through what others have written about it.? He beckoned Phireem to come closer as they headed closer to the aura. ?This is Terrestria?s greatest secret. I am entrusting it with you, for I feel my days are running short.?

Phireem nodded, tears forming in his eyes and mingling with some of the rain streaming down his face as Faire continued. ?On the other side of this portal is another world, completely unlike Terrestria. From what I could gather, the people there are quite hostile to strangers. It also seems that they are like Lower-Order Tramicites, and none of the Higher-Order exists anymore. That being said, they also have Gorbian-like technology, perhaps even surpassing said tools. I would not recommend trying to enter that world unless some terrible tragedy befalls us.?

Phireem interrupted. ?Why is this such a big secret? Wouldn?t this be a good thing for all three countries and this other world? Another unique race to learn about and make ourselves better by sounds like only a good thing.?

Faire shook his head, spraying droplets of water. ?That is not true, Phireem. This world has billions of people, millions of warriors. They would think that Higher-Order people and the Tamelines something ?special?, so they would charge in, take us at will, cart all of us around and show us off to others to gain fame and popularity amongst their own people. They are cruel men, and would treat us as animals, slaves, and trinkets that they could kill whenever they think we are not profiting them enough.?

?So, it is a good thing there are no Fire Controllers on- what is that world called, Faire??

Faire shrugged. ?No one has been able to ask the inhabitants what they call their world, so we call it Oceania. As you were saying???

Phireem nodded. ?It is a good thing there are no Fire Controllers on Oceania, so that they cannot discover us. But is there a way to destroy the portal so we can prevent anything happening??

?No, there is not.? Faire stared into the portal. ?It is impossible to know how to use it without proper instruction anyway, so accidentally entering it is highly improbable.?

?Then why don?t we forget about the whole thing? Just call it some sort of myth and ignore the fact that there is another world that cannot reach us beyond it.?

?Because if Tramice ever falls, this is our only hope of escape. We cannot turn to either Tamel or Gorbia for protection if one decides it has seen enough of us. Although our army is strong, we have to be prepared for every possibility.?

Phireem stood in the soaked and softened earth, thinking. ?Okay? how do I open it??

Faire snapped his fingers, and flames blazed in both of his hands. ?I?m glad you asked. All you have to do is make your fire swirl like a whirlpool, or a tornado. It will not harm others here.? He twisted both of his hands, forming a small whirlwind of fire in front of both men. The rain slowed down his progress somewhat, but Faire continued diligently, adding fire and spinning it until the very air in the tornado seemed to crumble away, and in its place stood a window to Oceania. A verdant green field showed itself to Phireem.

?Wow! So that?s Oceania.?

?Yes, it is. Pick up that rock over there, young man, and drop it into this portal.?

Phireem held the fist-sized stone in his hands, and watched it fall through the portal into Oceania. Faire snapped his fingers, and all fire disappeared, as did the window to the field. No rock lay on the ground.

Faire smiled. ?As you can see, a rock from Tramice is now forever in that world.?

Phireem?s blue eyes stared at the matching mist that surrounded him. ?You must tell me more about this, my friend.?

Faire looked up. ?It appears the rain is ceasing. Come, and let us go back to King?s Town. I will tell you more about the portal.?

Both men exited the clearing, but the portal remained, shining mysteriously.

Lawmaker: FBI checking training angle in bombing

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said Sunday that the FBI is investigating in the United States and overseas to determine whether the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing received training that helped them carry out the attack.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, is charged with joining with his older brother, Tamerlan, who's now dead, in setting off the shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs. The bombs were triggered by a remote detonator of the kind used in remote-control toys, U.S. officials have said.

U.S. officials investigating the bombings have told The Associated Press that so far there is no evidence to date of a wider plot, including training, direction or funding for the attacks.

A criminal complaint outlining federal charges against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev described him as holding a cellphone in his hand minutes before the first explosion.

The brothers are ethnic Chechens from Russia who came to the United States about a decade ago with their parents.

"I think given the level of sophistication of this device, the fact that the pressure cooker is a signature device that goes back to Pakistan, Afghanistan, leads me to believe ? and the way they handled these devices and the tradecraft ? ... that there was a trainer and the question is where is that trainer or trainers," said Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, on "Fox News Sunday."

"Are they overseas in the Chechen region or are they in the United States?" McCaul said. "In my conversations with the FBI, that's the big question. They've casted a wide net both overseas and in the United States to find out where this person is. But I think the experts all agree that there is someone who did train these two individuals."

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said he thought it's "probably true" that the attack was not linked to a major group. But, he told CNN's "State of the Union," that there "may have been radicalizing influences" in the U.S. or abroad. "It does look like a lot of radicalization was self-radicalization online, but we don't know the full answers yet."

On ABC's "This Week," moderator George Stephanopoulos raised the question to the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee about FBI suspicions that the brothers had help in getting the bombs together.

"Absolutely, and not only that, but in the self-radicalization process, you still need outside affirmation," responded Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich.

"We still have persons of interest that we're working to find and identify and have conversations with," he added.

At this point in the investigation, however, Sen. Claire McCaskill said there was no evidence that the brothers "were part of a larger organization, that they were, in fact, part of some kind of terror cell or any kind of direction."

The Missouri Democrat, who's on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, told CBS' "Face the Nation" that "it appears, at this point, based on the evidence, that it's the two of them."

Homemade bombs built from pressure cookers have been a frequent weapon of militants in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen once published an online manual on how to make one.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was an ardent reader of jihadist websites and extremist propaganda, officials have said. He frequently looked at extremist sites, including Inspire magazine, an English-language online publication produced by al-Qaida's Yemen affiliate.

In recent years, two would-be U.S. attackers reported receiving bomb-making training from foreign groups but failed to set off the explosives.

A Nigerian man was given a mandatory life sentence for trying to blow up a packed jetliner on Christmas Day 2009 with a bomb sewn into his underwear. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had tried to set off the bomb minutes before the Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight landed.

The device didn't work as planned, but it still produced smoke, flame and panic. He told authorities that he trained in Yemen under the eye of Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical American-born cleric and one of the best-known al-Qaida figures.

A U.S. drone strike in Yemen killed al-Awlaki in 2011.

In 2010, a Pakistani immigrant who tried to detonate a car bomb in New York's Times Square also received a life sentence. Faisal Shazad said the Pakistan Taliban provided him with more than $15,000 and five days of explosives training.

The bomb was made of fireworks fertilizer, propane tanks and gasoline canisters. Explosives experts said the fertilizer wasn't the right grade and the fireworks weren't powerful enough to set off the intended chain reaction.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama joked Saturday about his plans for a radical second-term evolution from a "strapping young Muslim Socialist" to retiree golfer, all with a new hairstyle like first lady Michelle's.

Obama used this year's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner to poke fun at himself and some of his political adversaries, asking if it was still possible to be brought down a peg after 4? years as commander-in-chief.

Entering to the rap track "All I Do Is Win" by DJ Khaled, Obama joked about how re-election would allow him to unleash a radical agenda. But then he showed a picture of himself golfing on a mock magazine cover of "Senior Leisure."

"I'm not the strapping young Muslim Socialist that I used to be," the president remarked, and then recounted his recent 2-for-22 basketball shooting performance at the White House Easter Egg hunt.

But Obama's most dramatic shift for the next four years appeared to be aesthetic. He presented a montage of shots featuring him with bangs similar to those sometimes sported by his wife.

Obama closed by noting the nation's recent tragedies in Massachusetts and Texas, praising Americans of all stripes from first responders to local journalists for serving the public good.

Saturday night's banquet not far from the White House attracted the usual assortment of stars from Hollywood and beyond. Actors Kevin Spacey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Claire Danes, who play government characters on series, were among the attendees, as was Korean entertainer Psy. Several Cabinet members, governors and members of Congress were present.

And despite coming at a somber time, nearly two weeks after the deadly Boston Marathon bombing and 10 days after a devastating fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, the president and political allies and rivals alike took the opportunity to enjoy some humor. Late-night talk-show host Conan O'Brien headlined the event.

Some of Obama's jokes came at his Republican rivals' expense. He asked that the GOP's minority outreach begin with him as a "trial run" and said he'd take his recent charm offensive with Republicans on the road, including to a book-burning event with Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson would have had better success getting Obama out of office if he simply offered the president $100 million to drop out of last year's race, Obama quipped.

And on the 2016 election, the president noted in self-referential irony that potential Republican candidate Sen. Marco Rubio wasn't qualified because he hasn't even served a full term in the Senate. Obama served less than four years of his six-year Senate term before he was elected president in 2008.

The gala also was an opportunity for six journalists, including Associated Press White House Correspondent Julie Pace, to be honored for their coverage of the presidency and national issues.

The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza won the Aldo Beckman Award, which recognizes excellence in the coverage of the presidency.

Pace won the Merriman Smith Award for a print journalist for coverage on deadline.

ABC's Terry Moran was the winner of the broadcast Merriman Smith Award for deadline reporting.

Reporters Jim Morris, Chris Hamby and Ronnie Greene of the Center for Public Integrity won the Edgar A. Poe Award for coverage of issues of national significance.

Kershaw?retires 18 straight, Dodgers blank Brewers

By JOE RESNICK

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Clayton Kershaw made a nifty return to form.

Kershaw retired 18 consecutive batters and struck out 12 in eight dominant innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers, boosted by Carl Crawford's two home runs, beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 Sunday.

The 2011 NL Cy Young winner began the season with a shutout over San Francisco, and soon extended his scoreless streak to 16 innings.

Kershaw (3-2) failed to get through the sixth inning in each of his last two starts.

"It was good to see Kershaw back to his old self," Crawford said. "He struggled his last two outings, so to get him back on track is a plus for us."

Kershaw left the clubhouse before reporters were allowed in after the game to tend to a personal matter.

"He's a great pitcher," said Ramon Hernandez, joined the Dodgers this season and hadn't caught the All-Star in a game. "Kershaw locates every pitch. He has an idea what he wants to do. He's very smart. He always has a plan what he wants to do with every hitter he's facing."

Kershaw scattered four hits and didn't walk a batter while lowering his ERA to 1.73. The left-hander, who led the NL in ERA in each of the previous two seasons, hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last 18 starts - the longest active streak in the majors. The last time he did was July 24, 2012, when he gave up eight at St. Louis.

"We ran into some good pitching," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said, shaking his head. "This guy today, I wouldn't want any part of him. When he's on, you're going to struggle to score. When he's commanding the fastball inside, you're in big trouble because there's not much you can do with the pitch. And he knows when to throw the offspeed stuff away, so you can't cover all of the plate."

Kershaw stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings, retiring Jonathan Lucroy on a double-play grounder in the first and striking out Martin Maldonado to end the second.

Kershaw gave up a leadoff double in the eighth to Carlos Gomez. The speedy runner tried to advance on Maldonado's broken-bat comebacker to Kershaw and was tagged out by third baseman Juan Uribe in a rundown.

"That was an unbelievable play he made," Uribe said. "This guy, he can pitch, he can hit and he can make a good play, too. He's a player. He's unbelievable. You want to make plays for pitchers like that. Guys like that hustle the game along and they want to win the game. I'm happy for him that he won today."

Brandon League pitched a perfect ninth inning for his eighth save in nine chances.

Crawford homered on the first pitch of the game from Kyle Lohse (1-2). It was the fourth time Lohse had given up a home run to his first batter in 336 career starts, and the first one that came on his very first pitch.

"The past week, guys have been getting ahead of me with the first pitch right down the middle. So I just picked today to be aggressive with the first pitch," Crawford said. "This is a tough ballpark to hit home runs in, but they say the ball flies better here in the daytime. So I caught a break today."

Crawford's second homer came on an 0-2 count in the fifth inning and landed in the right field pavilion. It was his sixth multihomer game in the majors and first since July 8, 2010, for Tampa Bay.

"They've pretty much given me the freedom to be myself and not try to be the traditional leadoff hitter who just takes a bunch of pitches and try to slap the ball," Crawford said. "I like to try to put a good swing on the ball and not just hit the ball to the shortstop and run. I mean, there's times for that, but for the most part, I'm trying to hit the ball in the gap somewhere."

NOTES: Lohse reached the 2,000-inning mark for his 13-year career when he retired Kershaw on a grounder to end the second. ... Dodgers LHP Ted Lilly makes his second start on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series with Colorado. He is 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA in four career starts against the Rockies at Dodger Stadium. ... Brewers RHP Yovani Gallardo will pitch the opener of a three-game set against Pittsburgh on Monday at Miller Park. He is 6-0 with a 2.18 ERA in his last seven starts overall against the Pirates.

Are lesbians more accepted than gay men? | The Salt Lake Tribune

ADVANCE FOR USE SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 2013 AND THEREAFTER - Sarah Toce, editor of a daily online news magazine "The Seattle Lesbian," poses for a photo Friday, April 19, 2013, in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, in an alleyway that has been the site of fights and other violence against gay men. Even as society has become more accepting of homosexuality overall, longstanding research has shown more societal tolerance for lesbians than gay men, and that gay men are significantly more likely to be targets of violence. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)

Society ? Research shows more societal tolerance for lesbians, and gay men face more violence.

Chicago ? It may be a man?s world, as the saying goes, but lesbians seem to have an easier time living in it than gay men do.

High-profile lesbian athletes have come out while still playing their sports, but not a single gay male athlete in major U.S. professional sports has done the same. While television?s most prominent same-sex parents are the two fictional dads on "Modern Family," surveys show that society is actually more comfortable with the idea of lesbians parenting children.

And then there is the ongoing debate over the Boy Scouts of America proposal to ease their ban on gay leaders and scouts.

Reaction to the proposal, which the BSA?s National Council will take up next month, has been swift, and often harsh. Yet amid the discussions, the Girl Scouts of USA reiterated their policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, among other things. That announcement has gone largely unnoticed.

Certainly, the difference in the public?s reaction to the scouting organizations can be attributed, in part, to their varied histories, including the Boy Scouts? longstanding religious ties and a base that has become less urban over the years, compared with the Girl Scouts?.

But there?s also an undercurrent here, one that?s often present in debates related to homosexuality, whether over the military?s now-defunct "Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell" policy or even same-sex marriage. Even as society has become more accepting of homosexuality overall, longstanding research has shown more societal tolerance for lesbians than gay men, and that gay men are significantly more likely to be targets of violence.

That research also has found that it?s often straight men who have the most difficult time with homosexuality ? and particularly gay men ? says researcher Gregory Herek.

"Men are raised to think they have to prove their masculinity, and one big part about being masculine is being heterosexual. So we see that harassment, jokes, negative statements and violence are often ways that even younger men try to prove their heterosexuality," says Herek, a psychologist at the University of California, Davis, who has, for years, studied this phenomenon and how it plays out in the gay community.

That is not, of course, to downplay the harassment lesbians face. It can be just as ugly.

But it?s not as frequent, Herek and others have found, especially in adulthood. It?s also not uncommon for lesbians to encounter straight men who have a fascination with them.

story continues below

"The men hit on me. The women hit on me. But I never feel like I?m in any immediate danger," says Sarah Toce, the 29-year-old editor of The Seattle Lesbian and managing editor of The Contributor, both online news magazines. "If I were a gay man, I might ? and if it?s like this in Seattle, can you imagine what it is like in less-accepting parts of middle America?"

One of Herek?s studies found that, overall, 38 percent of gay men said that, in adulthood, they?d been victims of vandalism, theft or violence ? hit, beaten or sexually assaulted ? because they were perceived as gay. About 13 percent of lesbians said the same.

A separate study of young people in England also found that, in their teens, gay boys and lesbians were almost twice as likely to be bullied as their straight peers. By young adulthood, it was about the same for lesbians and straight girls. But in this study, published recently in the journal Pediatrics, gay young men were almost four times more likely than their straight peers to be bullied.

At least one historian says it wasn?t always that way for either men or women, whose "expressions of love" with friends of the same gender were seen as a norm ? even idealized ? in the 19th century.

"These relationships offered ample opportunity for those who would have wanted to act on it physically, even if most did not," says Thomas Foster, associate professor and head of the history department at DePaul University in Chicago.

Today?s "code of male gendered behavior," he says, often rejects these kinds of expressions between men.

We joke about the "bro-mance" ? a term used to describe close friendships between straight men. But in some sense, the humor stems from the insinuation that those relationships could be romantic, though everyone assumes they aren?t.

Call those friends "gay," a word that?s still commonly used as an insult, and that?s quite another thing. Consider the furor over Rutgers University men?s basketball coach Mike Rice, who was recently fired for mistreating his players and mocking them with gay slurs.

If two women dance together at a club or walk arm-in-arm down the street, people are usually less likely to question it ? though some wonder if that has more to do with a lack of awareness than acceptance.

"Lesbians are so invisible in our society. And so I think the hatred is more invisible," says Laura Grimes, a licensed clinical social worker in Chicago whose counseling practice caters to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients.

Grimes says she also frequently hears from lesbians who are harassed for "looking like dykes," meaning that people are less accepting if they look more masculine.

Still, Ian O?Brien, a gay man in Washington, D.C., sees more room for women "to transcend what femininity looks like, or at least negotiate that space a little bit more."
