5 Don'ts Of Networking In A New City - Business Insider

The decision to move to a new city is a difficult and intimidating one.

The thought of learning the ropes again and finding a new group of friends in a strange place is scary?but moving to a new city can also open many new doors for you personally and professionally.

Whether you move to a new city on a whim, for a spouse or loved one or for new career opportunities, networking is key to acclimating yourself. But going about this can be tricky.

Here?s what not to do when networking in a new city:

1. Let your shyness or introverted nature get the best of you

Being friendly and open to new opportunities is essential when networking, especially when you?re in a new city. If you?re generally a shy or introverted person, don?t let this shyness be confused with disinterest or rudeness. It can be a huge turnoff for new professional connections who don?t know you yet.

Do try to make conversation and relate with the people you meet. Not every new face is going to be the right connection for you, and that?s okay.

2. Forget to sign up for branches of your professional organizations in your area

And don?t forget to actually attend these meetings, either! Being involved in professional organizations is great for networking in general. But when you?ve moved to a new city, professional organizations can be a smart place to make new friends, too.

Most national organizations have several chapters in each state, so take a look at your group?s website to see where the next meeting takes place. Try branching out to new professional organizations, too, especially if you?re moving to a larger city.

3. Hand out your business card to every person you meet

It may seem like a great strategy to hand out your business card to every new contact you meet, but as I mentioned above, not every connection is going to be right for you. Use your business cards meaningfully when networking in a new city. Consider whether there are any business opportunities, professional networking opportunities or common interests with this new connection before handing them your card.

4. Forget your past connections

Networking in a new city is overwhelming, especially if you were well-established in your previous location. Don?t forget to make use of your old job network when moving to a new city; a current connection might know someone in the city they can connect you with. And those friend-of-a-friend connections often prove to be the most fruitful.

5. Say ?no? too often

When you?re networking in a new city, it?s so important to say yes when opportunities arise. Even if you?re asked to do something a bit outside your comfort zone, it?s important to explore, meet new people and have new experiences to talk about with city natives. You never know who you might meet along the way.

Want more ideas? Try volunteering, signing up for gyms or other recreational activities or following city-specific groups online like Meetups or Twitter chats.

Space instrument adds big piece to solar corona puzzle

Jan. 23, 2013 ? The Sun's visible surface, or photosphere, is 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. As you move outward from it, you pass through a tenuous layer of hot, ionized gas or plasma called the corona. The corona is familiar to anyone who has seen a total solar eclipse, since it glimmers ghostly white around the hidden Sun.

But how can the solar atmosphere get hotter, rather than colder, the farther you go from the Sun's surface? This mystery has puzzled solar astronomers for decades. A suborbital rocket mission that launched in July 2012 has just provided a major piece of the puzzle.

The High-resolution Coronal Imager, or Hi-C, revealed one of the mechanisms that pumps energy into the corona, heating it to temperatures up to 7 million degrees F. The secret is a complex process known as magnetic reconnection.

"This is the first time we've had images at high enough resolution to directly observe magnetic reconnection," explained Smithsonian astronomer Leon Golub (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics). "We can see details in the corona five times finer than any other instrument."

"Our team developed an exceptional instrument capable of revolutionary image resolution of the solar atmosphere. Due to the level of activity, we were able to clearly focus on an active sunspot, thereby obtaining some remarkable images," said heliophysicist Jonathan Cirtain (Marshall Space Flight Center).

Magnetic braids and loops

The Sun's activity, including solar flares and plasma eruptions, is powered by magnetic fields. Most people are familiar with the simple bar magnet, and how you can sprinkle iron filings around one to see its field looping from one end to the other. The Sun is much more complicated.

The Sun's surface is like a collection of thousand-mile-long magnets scattered around after bubbling up from inside the Sun. Magnetic fields poke out of one spot and loop around to another spot. Plasma flows along those fields, outlining them with glowing threads.

The images from Hi-C showed interweaved magnetic fields that were braided just like hair. When those braids relax and straighten, they release energy. Hi-C witnessed one such event during its flight.

It also detected an area where magnetic field lines crossed in an X, then straightened out as the fields reconnected. Minutes later, that spot erupted with a mini solar flare.

Hi-C showed that the Sun is dynamic, with magnetic fields constantly warping, twisting, and colliding in bursts of energy. Added together, those energy bursts can boost the temperature of the corona to 7 million degrees F when the Sun is particularly active.

Selecting the target

The telescope aboard Hi-C provided a resolution of 0.2 arcseconds -- about the size of a dime seen from 10 miles away. That allowed astronomers to tease out details just 100 miles in size. (For comparison, the Sun is 865,000 miles in diameter.)

Hi-C photographed the Sun in ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 19.3 nanometers -- 25 times shorter than wavelengths of visible light. That wavelength is blocked by Earth's atmosphere, so to observe it astronomers had to get above the atmosphere. The rocket's suborbital flight allowed Hi-C to collect data for just over 5 minutes before returning to Earth.

Hi-C could only view a portion of the Sun, so the team had to point it carefully. And since the Sun changes hourly, they had to select their target at the last minute -- the day of the launch. They chose a region that promised to be particularly active.

"We looked at one of the largest and most complicated active regions I've ever seen on the Sun," said Golub. "We hoped that we would see something really new, and we weren't disappointed."

Next steps

Golub said that data from Hi-C continues to be analyzed for more insights. Researchers are hunting areas where other energy release processes were occurring.

In the future, the scientists hope to launch a satellite that could observe the Sun continuously at the same level of sharp detail.

"We learned so much in just five minutes. Imagine what we could learn by watching the Sun 24/7 with this telescope," said Golub.

This research is being published in the journal Nature in a paper co-authored by Cirtain, Golub, A. Winebarger (Marshall), B. De Pontieu (Lockheed Martin), K. Kobayashi (University of Alabama -- Huntsville), R. Moore (Marshall), R. Walsh (University of Central Lancashire), K. Korreck, M. Weber and P. McCauley (CfA), A. Title (Lockheed Martin), S. Kuzin (Lebedev Physical Institute), and C. DeForest (Southwest Research Institute).

boy with football. copyright gretta schifano

My youngest lives and breathes football. This is positive in many ways ? he?s getting fit and learning about teamwork when he plays, he enjoys reading about the sport, loves going to matches with his Dad and actually wants to go to school on the days when it?s his turn to play football at lunchtime. When it comes to the Xbox he has no time for the war games that I can?t bear ? all he wants to play is FIFA 13.

However, there?s a side of the game which is not positive in any way, and the issue of racism together with some recent incidents have made me concerned at his passion for the game. In November a volunteer Dutch linesman died after being kicked and beaten by several teenage players (the youngest doesn?t know about this, thankfully). In December Manchester United?s Rio Ferdinand was injured by a coin thrown from the crowd. And then there was the behaviour of a ball boy and a Chelsea player last night.

In the match between Chelsea and Swansea a ball boy held on to a ball for too long and Eden Hazard, a Chelsea player, appears to have kicked the boy ?whilst trying to getting the ball back. In a statement on the Swansea website Hazard says: ?The boy put his whole body onto the ball and I was just trying to kick the ball. I apologise. The ball boy came in the changing room and we had a quick chat and I apologised and the boy apologised as well, and it is over. Sorry.?

It may be ?over? for those involved, but it isn?t for children like my son. He talked of nothing else this morning: ?Hazard?s a really good player?.Sometimes these things are set up, Mum?.I could be a ball boy?.Hazard should miss three games for that?.? and on and on and on. As I dropped him at school this morning the last thing he said to me was: ?Can you go on the internet all day today and make sure that ball boy?s alright??

I?ve lived and worked in Italy and Spain, and now live in rural south-east England with my husband, adoptive and birth children, dog and cat. I loved my work as a social action radio producer at the BBC, where my role was to get people volunteering. I was inspired by the volunteers and charities I worked with, but found it tricky juggling a career with family life, especially as my husband?s work means he?s often abroad for weeks at a time. I?m now a freelance journalist and write for the Financial Times, Guardian, Independent, National Geographic Traveller, Wanderlust, Practical Parenting & Pregnancy, Adoption Today and others. I write about family, travel, adoption, volunteering and parenting, as well as other interesting stuff that comes up, as long as I have the time.

Russia says U.S. rights law "odious" but wants constructive ties

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia wants constructive relations with the United States despite disputes over U.S. legislation designed to punish Russian human rights abusers and other difficulties in ties, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.

Lavrov spoke during an annual news conference after a year during which relations between the former Cold War foes have deteriorated following improvements under U.S. President Barack Obama's "reset" policy.

A major irritant has been the Magnitsky Act, a law signed by Obama last month that denies visas to Russians accused of human rights violations and freezes their assets in the United States.

Russia President Vladimir Putin has responded by signing a law that imposes similar measures on Americans it says have abused the rights of Russians and also bans adoptions of Russian orphans by Americans, further increasing tension.

Lavrov called the Magnitsky Act "odious" and also criticized a U.S. judge's recent ruling in a dispute over a collection of Jewish writings held in Russia. He also said the sides remain at odds over U.S. plans for a anti-missile shield in Europe.

However, he said, "We are interested in constructive dialogue and the development of stable, mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in the area of investment, in trade and economic relations and in contacts between people."

Euro debt burden stuck at high 90 percent of GDP

BERLIN (AP) ? Government debt in the countries that use the euro was stuck at 90 percent of gross domestic product at the end of last year's third quarter despite countries' efforts to improve their finances by cutting spending and raising taxes.

The European Union's statistical agency, Eurostat, said Wednesday that total government debt across the 17 EU countries that use the euro was barely changed from 89.9 percent of GDP three months earlier. It was up from 86.8 percent a year earlier.

More than three years after the debt crisis started in Greece, several eurozone countries are in recession and that's making it harder for them to get debt under control.

Government debt across the entire 27-nation EU totaled 85.1 percent at the end of September, compared with 85 percent in June.

Iris Van Herpen electrifies haute couture

PARIS (AP) ? Iris Van Herpen's electrifying haute couture show should have come with a warning sign: Danger High Voltage.

A mysterious black statue in a dimly lit Parisian salon awaited revelers Monday who suddenly gasped as this "statue" began to move; the figure was in fact a performer inside a black body stocking, standing on a Tesla coil.

Then followed one of the most unforgettable ?and frightening ? displays seen in recent couture memory: the electricity was turned on and this figure lit up like lightening.

As if straight out of a scene from the movie "X-Men," long electrical sparks shot out in all directions for several minutes.

It was a great, if extreme, introduction to the "voltage" theme of the avant-garde Dutch designer's fourth couture show for fall-winter 2013.

Van Herpen continued her signature exploration of organic life in 11 dynamic looks ? this season, through the natural electricity that, so say the program notes, "enervate the human body."

This was, as ever, twinned with a dash of poetic license, all to produce one of her strongest shows to date.

White trapezoid silhouettes with all-over spiky appliques perfectly evoked the high-energy fuzz of a voltage current.

In black, several dresses sported fine, bendy strips which pointed upward, like human hair that's exposed to static electricity.

The theme of sea creatures is recurrent in Van Herpen's artistic vocabulary ? here, seen explored in one column dress that was reminiscent of the energy-rich phosphorescence of deep-sea Medusas.

This show ? featuring some of the most imaginative clothes the Dutch wunderkind has produced ? will set her in good stead for her debut ready-to-wear show in March.

But it was the electric human that stole the show.

How to make long distance relationship work? - The Road to Unknown

Here are some tips to make long distance relationship work. Remember that the strongest relationships need a lot of hard work.

1. Keep the contact. Use Skype, send mails and texts to each other and try to call each other when you both have time to talk. Try to keep up the things that are happening in your lives. You can also send fan mail and small packages to brighten up the other person's day.

2. Talk about your goals. Be sure you are in the same page about your relationship. Talk about what you are expecting from the relationship..and be honest. Talk about how you want the long distance relationship to be handled..if other people are allowed and how often you should try to meet each other.

3. Trust the other person and be worthy of the trust. Don't cheat or look for someone to fill the empty bed. Would you do that if your partner would be around? I guess not. If you cheat, it can ruin the whole relationship. If you miss your partner, plan a trip to meet him/her. That's much better and healthier option if you want to keep your relationship alive.

4. Talk about your future together. Talk about the plans and wishes you have. Tell the other person how long you are willing to be in a long distance relationship, when you would like to move together, when to move forward in the relationship, and your dreams about marriage or children.

5. Visit as often as you can. Relationship can't last just through phone calls and Skype. You also need to see each other in person and have time to take care of the physical parts of the relationship. Talk about how often you would like to see each other and make plans to get together when you can. If you are not living too far away and the traveling is not expensive, it's easier to meet more often. If you have to fly to reach the other person, you are probably going to see less often. That's why it's important to plan ahead and make sure you say a bit longer than couple of days.

6. Be honest with each other. Talk honestly about your feelings and thoughts. If you are missing the person too much or you think the situation is too hard, discuss about it. Maybe there are ways you can do to improve the situation.

7. Stay positive..even when it's difficult. In really tough time try to find some things to do that you really enjoy. Go dancing, get together with some friends or go to the movies. Try to keep your spirit up. The worst thing you can do is to get depressed about the situation. Think about it in a positive way. If you know that your partner is going to come to visit you soon, make some plans for each other. Even if you can't be together at the moment, in the future you can.

8. Be there for each other. It's important to support the other person and be there when the other one is going through a tough time. Find a moment when you both have time to listen each other's problems and worries.

9. Remember the past and dream about the future. It's good to recall in your mind why you fell in love with each other, what you love about the other person, which great memories you have etc. This keeps you reminded why this relationship is worth of fighting for. Dream also about the future you might have together. Realize that even if the situation feels hard, it will not continue like this forever.

10. Appreciate the time you have together. When you don't see each other so often make use of the time you have together. Be sure that you take care also the intimate aspects of your relationship. Don't worry about tomorrow..just concentrate on each other.

Grophland : New fishing features - Virtual Pet List

We've added a whole bunch of new Fishing features today, to hopefully make this activity, already one of the most popular on Grophland, even more enjoyable. From today onwards all fish caught will be tracked. The total number of fish caught will be logged, along with the number of each type of fish that you catch. You can visit the Top Ten room to see the most fish caught, and buy a Catch Book from the fishing shop to see how many of each type of fish you have caught (as well as your own total count.

What's more you can also choose to release each fish as you catch them. A Released fish is thrown back, and a record of how many fish you throw back is also kept. Naturally that count is also logged in your Catch Book, and it has it's own top ten. In addition there are a whole set of new Avatars to reward catching and throwing back your fish.

Some people have already noticed that all caught fish now have a weight, with each fish having a unique weight. When you catch a fish you will see the weight displayed, and you can also check it by clicking on the fish from your Inventory. If you take the fish to the new Fisherman's Wharf in the Docks (it's on the far right) then you can have your fish's weight officially recorded. The best you've weight recorded for each species is logged in your Catch Book, and the best weight caught ever is listed for all to see at the Wharf, good for all sorts of bragging rights!

Finally, for those irritated by all those biting crabs, stinging jellyfish and hostile insects while fishing you can invest in a Fishing Tiki (also from the fishing supply store), which will drive these pests away for good!

Support steady in upstate NY home of Remington

ILION, N.Y. (AP) ? Not everyone here works at the Remington factory, but everyone knows someone who does. The big brick complex looms above the rooftops of the modest wood-frame homes. And Ilion can look more like a factory with a village than a village with a factory.

"Remington is Ilion. Ilion is Remington," said Mayor John Stephens.

Little wonder that residents in this blue-collar stretch of the Mohawk Valley are defending Remington after New York lawmakers banned the sale of semi-automatic assault-style rifles like the Bushmaster weapon made here. The move came after the weapon was linked to gunmen in the Connecticut school shootings and in the Christmas Eve slayings of two firefighters in western New York.

"It's the person that pulls the trigger. I don't care what kind of gun it is," Tom Bradle, a Remington employee, said as he walked back to the factory from lunch break on a chilly, gray day last week.

Chad Delmedico, who works on Remington's Model 700 bolt-action rifle, said it more simply: "We have a bum rap."

Remington has been intertwined with Ilion since shortly after Eliphalet Remington crafted a flintlock rifle on his father's forge in 1816. Even the elementary school shares the company's name. Company officials did not respond to calls seeking comment, but locals say the factory employs about 1,200 and also produces Bushmaster, Marlin and H&R products.

Parts of the Remington Arms Co. factory, with its imposing four-story front of brick and old-style, multi-paned windows, date back to the days when upstate New York was a manufacturing powerhouse. But factory jobs have become rarer in the string of modest towns along the Mohawk River, and Ilion, with about 8,000 residents, depends heavily on Remington Arms Co.

Stephens, a burly man with a walrus moustache, was disgusted by the news Dec. 14 of 20 first-graders and six adults killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. But he is critical of the New York state law approved this week that bans assault-style rifles, calls for background checks on ammunition purchases and outlaws large-capacity magazines, among other measures. He dismisses the idea that there's an emotional link between Newtown and Ilion.

"Are people disappointed and distraught?" Stephens asked. "Do they feel bad and are they sad? Absolutely! Absolutely! I would never wish that on anyone, never. But as far as an emotional attachment between us and them, I don't see it."

Stephens voiced a sentiment heard frequently in this largely conservative area: New York's law and the sweeping gun-regulation package proposed by President Barack Obama on Wednesday are wrongheaded.

At the State Bowling Center next to the factory, Rod Brown said the weapon that gunman Adam Lanza used in Connecticut could have easily been a Smith & Wesson or a Browning.

Kelley Holmes-Morton in her salon, Heads-R-Turning, said she is an NRA member who believes gun makers are not to blame. And Betty Watkins said as she pumped gas that the Second Amendment is being "pushed around and misused."

"I look at it differently," said Jamie Rudwall, a union official who has worked at the plant since 1995. He's also the father of a second-grader.

"I think of Anheuser-Busch, I think of Ford tires, I think of Tylenol," he said, citing other major brands that have been blamed for tragedies as varied as drunken driving deaths and poisonings. "It doesn't matter what age it is. Terrible things happen."

Robbi Breit at the Sellers Avenue consignment shop seemed more conflicted than others in Ilion but still feels that closing Remington won't end gun violence.

"I cried my heart out" after Sandy Hook, she said. "I'm torn between both sides. But you can get another job. You can't get another kid."

Bushmaster is owned by Freedom Group Inc., the largest firearms maker in the U.S., which has its headquarters on Remington Drive outside the neighboring small towns of Madison and Mayodan, N.C.

No guns or ammunition are manufactured there. Most people around know the 43,000-square-foot building near the high school and the Walmart as the home of Remington Arms, which moved to the site in the mid-1990s, and not the weapons conglomerate Freedom Group has become, said Mayodan Town Manager Michael Brandt.

"They're not big contributors to the community like a typical large company would be in an area," Brandt said. "This is where they're located but we don't really see much of them."

Word that Freedom Group is for sale and changes are looming has generated little local concern in an area where surviving textile producers and a Miller-Coors brewery are bigger employers, said Sharon Chirichella, who runs a temporary staffing agency and is an officer with the local chamber of commerce.

That contrasts with Ilion, where the concern among people is the future of Remington. The company had said last March it could leave New York if the state went ahead with a move to add unique identifying information on spent bullet casings. That proposal is off the table but people here now wonder where things stand in the wake of the new state law, which does not affect Remington's ability to manufacture assault-style weapons here.

"If I'm an executive at Remington, what's my attitude going to be toward the state that bans one of the premier products that I produce?" asked local Assemblyman Marc Butler.

Obama's gun-control proposal added more uncertainty. Rudwall, president of the United Mine Workers of America Local 717, said he expected the gun business to increase in the short term amid new regulatory proposals, but he worries about jobs in Ilion long term.

"We've been here almost 200 years. I hope to be here another 200," Rudwall said.

Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial dies at age 92

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- No last name necessary.

A slew of batting titles. Corkscrew stance. Humble. A gentleman. All-around good guy.

Stan the Man.

Stanley Frank Musial, the St. Louis Cardinals star who was one of the greatest players in the history of baseball, died Saturday. He was 92.

''I never heard anybody say a bad word about him - ever,'' Willie Mays said in a statement released by the Hall of Fame.

The Cardinals announced Musial's death in a news release and said he died at his home in Ladue, a St. Louis suburb, surrounded by family. The team said Musial's son-in-law, Dave Edmonds, informed the club of the slugger's death.

Earlier Saturday, baseball lost another Hall of Famer when longtime Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver died at age 82.

Musial, the Midwest icon with too many batting records to fit on his Hall of Fame plaque, was so revered in St. Louis that two statues in his honor stand outside Busch Stadium - one just wouldn't do him justice. He was one of baseball's greatest hitters, every bit the equal of Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio even without the bright lights of the big city.

Musial won seven National League batting crowns, was a three-time MVP and helped the Cardinals capture three World Series championships in the 1940s.

He spent his entire 22-year career with the Cardinals and made the All-Star team 24 times - baseball held two All-Star games each summer for a few seasons. He had been the longest-tenured living Hall of Famer.

''Stan will be remembered in baseball annals as one of the pillars of our game,'' Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said. ''The mold broke with Stan. There will never be another like him.''

A pitcher in the low minors until he injured his arm, Musial turned to playing the outfield and first base. It was a stroke of luck for him, as he went on to hit .331 with 475 home runs before retiring in 1963.

Widely considered the greatest Cardinals player ever, Musial was the first person in team history to have his number retired. Ol' 6 probably was the most popular, too, especially after Albert Pujols skipped town.

''I will cherish my friendship with Stan for as long as I live,'' Pujols wrote on Twitter. ''Rest in Peace.''

At the suggestion of a pal, actor John Wayne, Musial carried around autographed cards of himself to give away. He enjoyed doing magic tricks for kids and was fond of pulling out a harmonica to entertain crowds with a favorite, ''The Wabash Cannonball.''

Scandal-free and eager to play every day, Musial struck a chord with fans throughout America's heartland and beyond. For much of his career, St. Louis was the most western outpost in the majors, and the Cardinals' vast radio network spread word about him in all directions.

Farmers in the field and families on the porch would tune in, as did a future president - Bill Clinton recalled doing his homework listening to Musial's exploits.

''We have lost the most beloved member of the Cardinals family,'' team chairman William DeWitt Jr. said.

Musial's public appearances dwindled in recent years, though he took part in the pregame festivities at Busch Stadium during the 2011 postseason as the Cardinals won the World Series. And he was at the White House in February 2011 when President Barack Obama presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor for contributions to society.

At the ceremony, President Obama said: ''Stan remains to this day an icon untarnished, a beloved pillar of the community, a gentleman you'd want your kids to emulate.''

He certainly delivered at the plate.

Musial never struck out 50 times in a season. He led the NL in most every hitting category for at least one year, except homers. He hit a career-high 39 home runs in 1948, falling one short of winning the Triple Crown.

''Major League Baseball has lost one of its true legends in Stan Musial, a Hall of Famer in every sense and a man who led a great American life. He was the heart and soul of the historic St. Louis Cardinals franchise for generations,'' Commissioner Bud Selig said. ''As remarkable as 'Stan the Man' was on the field, he was a true gentleman in life. All of Major League Baseball mourns his passing.''

In all, Musial held 55 records when he retired in 1963. Fittingly, the accolades on his bronze Hall plaque start off with this fact, rather than flowery prose: ''Holds many National League records ...''

He played nearly until his 43rd birthday, adding to his totals. He got a hit with his final swing, sending an RBI single past Cincinnati's rookie second baseman - that was Pete Rose, who would break Musial's league hit record of 3,630 some 18 years later.

Of those hits, Musial got exactly 1,815 at home and exactly 1,815 on the road. He also finished with 1,951 RBIs and scored 1,949 runs.

All that balance despite a most unorthodox left-handed stance. Legs and knees close together, he would cock the bat near his ear and twist his body away from the pitcher. When the ball came, he uncoiled.

Unusual, that aspect of Musial.

Asked to describe the habits that kept him in baseball for so long, Musial once said: ''Get eight hours of sleep regularly. Keep your weight down, run a mile a day. If you must smoke, try light cigars. They cut down on inhaling.''

One last thing, he said: ''Make it a point to bat .300.''

As for how he did that, Musial offered a secret.

''I consciously memorized the speed at which every pitcher in the league threw his fastball, curve, and slider,'' he said. ''Then, I'd pick up the speed of the ball in the first 30 feet of its flight and knew how it would move once it has crossed the plate.''

It worked pretty well, considering Musial began his baseball career as a pitcher in the low minors. And by his account, as he said during his induction speech in Cooperstown, an injury had left him as a ''dead, left-handed pitcher just out of Class D.''

Hoping to still reach the majors, he turned to another position. It was just the change he needed.

Musial made his major league debut late in 1941, the season that Williams batted .406 for the Boston Red Sox and DiMaggio hit in a record 56 straight games for the New York Yankees.

Musial never expressed regret or remorse that he didn't attract more attention than the cool DiMaggio or prickly Williams. Fact is, Musial was plenty familiar in every place he played.

Few could bring themselves to boo baseball's nicest superstar, not even the Brooklyn Dodgers crowds that helped give him his nickname, a sign of weary respect for his .359 batting average at Ebbets Field.

Many, many years before any sports fans yelled ''You're the man!'' at their favorite athletes, Stan was indeed the Man.

Dodgers pitcher Preacher Roe once joked about how to handle Musial: ''I throw him four wide ones and then I try to pick him off first base.''

Brooklynites had another reason to think well of Musial: Unlike Enos Slaughter and other Cardinals teammates, he was supportive when the Dodgers' Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier in 1947. Bob Gibson, who started out with the Cardinals in the late 1950s, would recall how Musial had helped establish a warm atmosphere between blacks and whites on the team.

''I knew Stan very well,'' Mays said. ''He used to take care of me at All-Star games, 24 of them. He was a true gentleman who understood the race thing and did all he could.''

Like DiMaggio and Williams, Musial embodied a time when the greats stayed with one team. He joined the Cardinals during the last remnants of the Gas House Gang and stayed in St. Louis until Gibson and Curt Flood ushered in a new era of greatness.

''Sad to hear about Stan the Man, it's an honor to wear the same uniform,'' current Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday tweeted.

The only year Musial missed with the Cardinals was 1945, when he was in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was based in Pearl Harbor, assigned to a unit that helped with ship repair.

Before and after his military service, he was a star hitter.

''St. Louis has been lucky to have a player like Stan Musial. He will always be Mr. Baseball,'' Hall of Fame Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog said. ''It's a very big loss. You can go around the world and you'll never find a better human being than Stan Musial.''

Musial was the NL MVP in 1943, 1946 and 1948, and was runner-up four other years. He enjoyed a career remarkably free of slumps, controversies or rivalries.

''Stan was a favorite in Cooperstown, from his harmonica rendition of 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' during Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, to the reverence he commanded among other Hall of Fame members and all fans of the game. More than just a baseball hero, Stan was an American icon and we will very much miss him in Cooperstown,'' Hall of Fame chairman Jane Forbes Clark said.

The Cardinals were dominant early in Musial's career. They beat DiMaggio and the Yankees in the 1942 World Series, lost to the Yankees the next year and defeated the St. Louis Browns in 1944. In 1946, the Cardinals beat Williams and the visiting Red Sox in Game 7 at Sportsman's Park.

Musial, mostly a left fielder then, starred with Terry Moore in center and Slaughter, another future Hall of Famer, in right, making up one of baseball's greatest outfields. Later on, Musial would switch between the outfield and first base.

Musial never played on another pennant winner after 1946. Yet even after the likes of Mays, Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron came to the majors, Musial remained among baseball's best.

The original Musial statue outside the new Busch Stadium is a popular meeting place before games and carries this inscription: ''Here stands baseball's perfect warrior. Here stands baseball's perfect knight.''

''Everybody's a Musial fan,'' Herzog once said.

Musial gave the press little to write about beyond his grace and greatness on the field. He didn't date movie stars, spike opponents or chew out reporters or umpires.

In 1958, he reached the 3,000-hit level and became the NL's first $100,000-a-year player. Years earlier, he had turned down a huge offer to join the short-lived Mexican League. He never showed resentment over the multimillion dollar salaries of modern players. He thought they had more fun in his days.

''I enjoyed coming to the ballpark every day and I think we enjoyed the game,'' Musial said in a 1991 Associated Press interview. ''We had a lot of train travel, so we had more time together. We socialized quite a bit and we'd go out after ballgames.''

He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1969, his first year of eligibility.

''It was, you know, a dream come true,'' Musial once said. ''I always wanted to be a ballplayer.''

After retiring as a player, Musial served for years in the Cardinals' front office, including as general manager in 1967, when the Cardinals won the World Series.

In the 1970s, he occasionally played in Old-Timers' Day games and could still line the ball to the wall. He was a fixture for decades at the Cooperstown induction ceremonies and also was a member of the Hall's Veterans Committee. Often, after the Vets panel had voted, he'd pull out a harmonica conveniently located in his jacket pocket and lead the other members in a rendition of ''Take Me Out to the Ball Game.''

Into the 2000s, Musial would spend time with the Cardinals at spring training, thrilling veterans and rookies alike with his stories.

Ever ready, he performed the national anthem on his harmonica at least one opening day at Busch Stadium. Musial learned his music during overnight train trips in the 1940s and in the 1990s was a member of a trio known as ''Geriatric Jazz'' and collaborated on a harmonica instructional book.

Stanley Frank Musial was born in Donora, Pa., on Nov. 21, 1920, son of a Polish immigrant steelworker. He began his minor league career straight out of high school, in June 1938, and soon after married high school sweetheart Lillian Labash, with whom he had four children.

Musial fell in 1940 while trying to make a tough catch and hurt his left arm, damaging his pitching prospects. Encouraged by minor league manager Dickie Kerr to try playing the outfield, he did so well in 1941 that the Cardinals moved him up to the majors in mid-September - and he racked up a .426 average during the final weeks of the season.

In his best year, 1948, he had four five-hit games and batted .376, best in the National League. He also led his league that year in runs scored (135), hits (230), total bases (429), doubles (46), and triples (18).

In 1954, he set a major league record with five home runs in a doubleheader against the New York Giants. He hit .300 or better in 16 consecutive seasons and hit a record six home runs in All-Star play, including a 12th-inning, game-winning shot in 1955.

In 1962, at age 41, he batted .330 and hit 19 home runs. In his final game, on Sept. 29, 1963, he had two hits at Busch Stadium against the Reds and the Cardinals retired his uniform number.

He was active in business, too. He served as a director of the St. Louis-based Southwest Bank. He was co-owner of a popular St. Louis steakhouse, ''Stan Musial and Biggie's,'' and a bowling alley with former teammate Joe Garagiola (leading to a bitter fallout that eventually got resolved). He later ran Stan the Man Inc., specializing in merchandise he autographed. Musial was known for handing out folded $1 bills.

A prominent Polish-American, he was a charter member of the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame and was warmly regarded by his ancestral country, which in 2000 dedicated Stan Musial Stadium in Kutno, Poland. Musial also was involved politically, campaigning for John F. Kennedy in 1960 and serving as Lyndon Johnson's director of the President's Council on Physical Fitness.

Musial's versatility was immortalized in verse, by popular poet of the times Ogden Nash, who in ''The Tycoon'' wrote of the Cardinals star and entrepreneur:

''And, between the slugging and the greeting,

To the bank for a directors' meeting.

Yet no one grudges success to Stan,

Good citizen and family man,

Though I would love to have his job

One half tycoon, one half Ty Cobb.''

The Cardinals said Musial is survived by his four children, Richard, Gerry, Janet and Jean, as well as 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Musial's wife died in May 2012.

Funeral arrangements had not yet been finalized, the Cardinals said. The team set up a memorial site around one of Musial's statues at Busch Stadium.

(AP) ? Syria's foreign minister invited the country's rebels on Saturday to lay down their weapons and take part in a national dialogue, saying everyone who participates will be included in a new Cabinet with wide executive powers.

Walid al-Moallem said in a live interview on state TV late Saturday that any opposition parties could join the Cabinet as long as they reject foreign intervention in Syria. The Syrian government has started contacting "representatives of the Syrian people," he added.

Earlier this month, President Bashar Assad dismissed calls that he step down, vowing to keep fighting the rebels. Assad also proposed a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution ? concessions offered previously over the course of the uprising that began in March 2011. The opposition says that Assad can play no role in a resolution to the conflict.

"I tell the young men who carried arms to change and reform, take part in the dialogue for a new Syria and you will be a partner in building it. Why carry arms," al-Moallem said in the hour-long interview. "Those who want foreign intervention will not be among us."

He accused Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey of arming and financing the rebels in Syria. He said that Jabhat al-Nusra, an al-Qaida-linked group which the U.S. has declared a terrorist organization but which fights alongside Syrian rebels, had brought fighters from 27 countries to fight in Syria.

Last month, the international envoy tasked with Syria's crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi, proposed a plan to end Syria's war with a cease-fire followed by the formation of a transitional government to run the country until new elections can be held.

Brahimi did not mention Assad by name, but said the transitional government would have "full executive powers" and would replace the Syrian leader. The plan was unveiled by world powers at an international conference in Geneva in June. Al-Moallem said that the Geneva conference does not require Assad to leave power.

The interview came as activists reported violence in different areas of Syria.

In the northern province of Idlib, Syrian troops fought intense battles Saturday against rebels who are trying to capture two military bases in the northwest and step up their attacks on army compounds elsewhere in the country, activists said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said the rebels destroyed at least one tank near the town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib province. The rebels, who have been battling for weeks to take control of bases in Wadi Deif and Hamdiyeh, are working to cut off supply routes to the compounds, the Observatory said.

Attacks on government bases are a recent focus of fighting in Syria's civil war, which according to the United Nations has left more than 60,000 people dead since the conflict began in March 2011.

Last week, rebels captured the nearby air base of Taftanaz in a significant blow to President Bashar Assad's forces, who increasingly rely on airpower.

The rebels also have been trying to capture other air bases in the northern province of Aleppo, and, according to activists, were attacking the air base of Mannagh near the Turkish border.

In Turkey, state-run Anadolu news agency said Syria's air force targeted a mosque and a school building that was apparently sheltering displaced Syrians in the town of Salqin, some four miles (six kilometers) from the border with Turkey in Idlib province. Dozens of people were killed and wounded.

At least 30 people wounded in the attack were taken across the border to Turkey for treatment, and two died in Turkish hospitals, the news agency said.

The displaced Syrians were eating when the school was attacked, according to Anadolu, who interviewed witnesses who has crossed into the Turkish border province of Hatay. The wounded included women and children, the agency said.

Syria's official news agency SANA said troops had targeted rebel hideouts in Salqin, killing and wounding some of them.

Also in Turkey on Saturday, members of the newly-restructured Syrian opposition held a conference in Istanbul aiming to nominate representatives for a transitional government.

"We have some ideas, some proposals," said one opposition member, Abdul Ahad Astephoa, without mentioning any specifics.

The group, known as the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, was formed in Qatar in November amid international pressure to unite factions within the opposition.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said the government was sending reinforcements to the central city of Homs where rebels have controlled some neighborhoods for more than a year. Residents of Homs, Syria's third largest city, were one of the first to rise up against Assad and many refer to it as "the capital of the revolution."

"It seems they are preparing for a big attack on Homs," Abdul-Rahman said by telephone.

The Observatory and the LCC said troops attacked several suburbs of the capital, Damascus, as well as Homs and the southern rebel-held town of Busra al-Harir. The shelling and air raids targeted the Damascus suburbs of Douma, Daraya and Moadamiyeh where regime forces have been on the offensive for weeks, they said.

Dell XPS One 27 Touch

The Dell XPS One 27 Touch ($2,599.99 list) is a high-end all-in-one desktop PC that gets Windows 8 right. It starts off by helping you learn how to use the new operating system (and let's face it, Win 8 is new to most people); plus its touch interface makes sense in the new tiled Start screen environment. Add a speedy Core i7 processor and feature set that lets you run faster and farther than other all-in-one PCs, and you'll see why we chose the Dell XPS One 27 Touch as our new high-end all-in-one desktop Editors' Choice, sharing the title with the Apple iMac 27-inch (Late 2012). It has the power, it has the features, and it's got the touch.

Design and Features
From the front, the XPS One 27 Touch looks a lot like Dell's older non-touch model, at least until you adjust its height. Both systems sport 27-inch 2,560 by 1,440 (a.k.a., QHD) screens. Per its moniker, the XPS One 27 Touch has a 10-finger capacitive touch screen built into its chassis. The most prominent difference between the two is apparent when you look at the system from the side: The XPS One 27 Touch has a two-hinge support arm that not only governs tilt, but also allows a range of height adjustment, which is more versatile than a single-hinge arm that doesn't have height adjustments. The dual-hinge design also allows you to lean the screen way back for easier hands-on use. This is similar to systems like the Lenovo A720, which also tilts far back.

The XPS One 27 Touch's power cord still connects directly to the unit, eschewing the need for an external power brick (a good thing). You may wish to compare this system's styling (and certainly its price tag) to the iMac 27-inch (Late 2012). The iMac is certainly more svelte, due to its thinner chassis and lack of an optical drive, but the XPS One 27 Touch holds up fine due to its height adjustment and minimalist styling. If you want more outr? styling, then possibly systems like the Vizio 27-inch All-in-One PC (CA27-A1) would be more to your liking (and less expensive, though less quick as well).

The front of the system is where all the action happens. The bezel around the screen is glossy black, while the speaker "chin" below the screen sports a neutral gray color. These features will blend into the background when the system is in operation, as the 27-inch screen is bright and vivid. Blu-ray movies and online videos present well on the screen. We recommend you choose "no" when the pre-installed PowerDVD program asks to reduce the resolution to 1080p (1,920 by 1,080) to match the output from Blu-ray movies (the system is powerful enough to scale 1080p video up to the full screen resolution).

The screen is glossy, helping color accuracy, but the glossy finish also contributed to inadvertent reflections, particularly when viewing dark movie scenes or monochromatic desktop backgrounds. The XPS One 27 Touch has a row of backlit soft buttons below the screen that let you change inputs to the HDMI in port, eject the disc, or to turn the screen off entirely. The HDMI in port lets you connect additional sources like game consoles and will let you continue to use the screen after the internal PC components are obsolete. The HDMI out port lets you hook the system up to a larger screen HDTV, or use another monitor with the system for a multi-monitor multitasking setup.

The system's six USB 3.0 ports aren't blue, as they are on most laptops and desktops, but they are all compliant with the fast USB 3.0 standard. This means you don't have to worry about plugging your hard drive or external SSD in the "wrong" (i.e., slower) port. There's an SD card reader on the side for your digital snapshots. The system's Ethernet port is the remaining external connector, but you don't have to use wired Ethernet with the XPS One 27 Touch: The system comes with Bluetooth and 2.4GHz and 5 GHz 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and the included keyboard and mouse are wireless.

Windows 8 is best used on a touch-screen system, so it's no surprise that Windows 8 works well on the XPS One 27 Touch. The Start screen's tiles come up quickly, and it's easy to swipe, twist, and tap on the large seamless glass panel. You can bring up charms and use other Windows 8 UI commands with a swipe of the finger on the touch screen.

Aside from the standard group of Microsoft apps, Dell pre-loads Amazon (the store), Kindle (the reading app), Dell Shop (buying hard goods from Dell), Skype, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Cyberlink Media Suite (PowerDVD), and a link to download or activate Office. The fact that all of these apps are on the Start screen helps to keep the XPS One 27's desktop mode uncluttered. You'll also find a Getting Started with Windows 8 app on the Start screen, which is a great help to the millions of folks out there that haven't used Windows 8 until now.

Windows 8 is reasonably easy to navigate, once you unlearn many of the shortcuts you learned for XP, 7, et al. For example, the Getting Started app helps you learn how to use the Charms bar and switch between apps. You can still use the keyboard and mouse to navigate Windows, but the touch screen is better when you're on the Start screen. The configuration we looked at comes with a one-year subscription to McAfee Security Center as well as a one-year warranty.

The system comes with a high-end Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, Nvidia GeForce GT 640M graphics, and a 2 TB hard drive with 32GB mSATA supplemental cache drive. The cache drive helps speed operations, plus 2TB is plenty of storage space for an average family (or one determined downloader). 16GB is a massive amount of system memory. Capacities this large used to be reserved for video editors and people working on huge photo projects. For the consumer power user, 16GB means that you can keep lots of apps open and active simultaneously (like having 50 browser tabs open, viewing a photo library, and playing World of Warcraft simultaneously).

Performance
Dell XPS One 27 Touch The XPS One 27 Touch has plenty of power. The Intel Core i7-3770S processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 640M graphics combine to give a power user a system that won't shrink from doing real work. It can handle moderate gaming duties, as shown by its 38 frames-per-second (fps) score at Aliens Vs. Predator and 41 fps score the Heaven benchmark test (both at medium quality settings). Handbrake is quick as well, with a score of 34 seconds, second only to the (slightly) quicker Apple iMac 27-inch (32 seconds). The XPS One 27 Touch is in a similar race on the Photoshop CS6 test, coming in a second ahead of the iMac (3:15).

Both the iMac and the XPS XPS One 27 Touch have hybrid-style drives, though the iMac's Fusion drive works in a fundamentally different manner than the Dell's Intel SRT setup. Regardless, the end result is a system much faster overall than less expensive high-end touch screen all-in-one PCs like the Acer Aspire 7600U (A7600U-UR308).

The Dell XPS One 27 Touch is close to the pinnacle of all-in-one desktops, with a price tag to match. With a Blu-ray player, higher resolution than HD screen, and high-end power, the Dell XPS One 27 Touch is a great choice for users who want to use Windows 8 now, or those in the market for a high-end all-in-one that is not an iMac. The iMac we reviewed is pricier and has higher-end graphics so it's got better 3D numbers, but the XPS One 27 Touch is lock in step with the iMac on the multimedia tests. The XPS One 27 Touch the closest thing we have seen a perfect Windows 8 PC.
