Photo of the day: An Alaskan glacier up close

Submitted by Richard Paul / UGC

A plane flies in front of glacier located near Tracy Arm Fjord in Alaska.

Richard Paul took this photo of a small plane crossing in front of an Alaskan glacier while on a cruise outside of Juneau.

Paul, a San Diego, Calif., resident, made the trip to Alaska in October 2011, and enjoyed clear, calm weather.

"The cruise ship just stopped and drifted as we watched the glacier calving, the seals on the ice floating by and the infinite shapes of the 'bergy bits,' " he told TODAY.com.?

"Except for the occasional cracking of the glacier, the air was calm and quiet until the float plane flew by. It looked so small compared to the glacier ... I had to take a picture."
