If you're a grad student in finance, I really wouldn't recommend writing on a topic that's well outside the expertise of the entire faculty of your department. During your interviews and flyouts, you'll probably get grilled and slammed on issues of institutional details and database limitations by people who know far more about this stuff than any of your committee members.
While your ambition is laudable, and while writing such a paper would probably involve more initiative on your part than 90% of what CF reg monkey grad students churn out, you might be putting yourself in a bad position in the job market.
