Epidemiology: Rectal Cancer Differs ? Colon And Rectal Surgery

Colorectal cancer is a disease with a significant burden worldwide. This is the fourth malignancy commonly diagnosed cancer in both sexes with nearly 1 million people in developing annually.1 CRC CRC is the third most common cause of cancer death worldwide, responsible for the death 630,000 annually.2 United States, CRC is the third most common cancer in men and women and the second most common cause of cancer death in general. CRC represents 11% of cancers diagnosed.3 estimated 147,000 cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2004 and there will be 57,000 deaths from the disease.3 The worldwide incidence of CRC is increasing by 1975 worldwide incidence of CRC was only 500,000.4 In Western countries, some of the increase was due to an aging population, but in countries with a low base rate of CRC, an increased incidence after adjustment for age was found. Before 1985, the incidence of CRC ageadjusted United States had increased, but since then, rates have declined on average by -1.6% year5. This reduction was mainly confined to the Caucasian race and is largely limited to a decreased incidence of distal cancers. Therefore, the recent decline in incidence in the United States may be due to screening, especially screening with flexible sigmoidoscopy, 6, although other factors may have influenced this trend. The incidence of proximal cancers has remained relatively stable during the same period period.5, 6 Currently, the overall probability of an individual developing CRC in the U.S. on a life of almost 6% .3 From the point of for the population, age is the most important risk factor for CRC. The CRC is mainly a disease of elderly, 90% of cases are diagnosed in the age of 50.3 The risk of CRC continues to increase with age. The incidence per 100,000 people aged 80 to 84 is more than 7 times the incidence among those aged 50-54 years. However, CRC can occur at any age and CRC incidence occurring in patients aged under 40 may be increasing.7
