S.Korea factory output shrinks month-on-month

South Korea's industrial output fell month-on-month in June for the first time since March as the global slowdown took its toll on the export-led economy, according to the latest figures.

Production in manufacturing and mining declined a seasonally adjusted 0.4 percent from a month earlier following a revised 1.3 percent rise in May, Statistics Korea said.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had on average tipped a 0.1 percent rise in June.

Year-on-year the June output figure was up 1.6 percent, compared to a revised 2.9 percent rise in May and a 2.1 percent increase forecast by the Dow Jones poll.

"The on-month output decline is attributable to a fall in the manufacturing sector," the report said.

"Manufacturers were affected mostly by sluggish production of transportation equipment and machinery despite an increase in semiconductors, parts and cigarettes."

The government last month cut its 2012 growth forecast from 3.7 percent to 3.3 percent, citing tougher conditions in overseas markets.

Canada's economic growth slows in May

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's economy grew by a less-than-expected 0.1 percent in May from April as weak manufacturing and construction activity partially offset strength in natural resources and some services industries, according to Statistics Canada data on Tuesday.

Analysts in a Reuters poll had forecast, on average, 0.2 percent growth in gross domestic product in May, following an expansion of 0.3 percent in April.

Goods-producing industries overall were flat in May while services industries eked out a 0.1 percent gain in the month.

The mining and oil and gas extraction industry grew at a robust pace for the second straight month as crude production continued to rise after maintenance and production shutdowns in February and March. The 0.6 percent jump in May output followed a 2.0 percent surge in April.

Retail sales, finance and insurance businesses and wholesale trade also contributed to growth. Manufacturing declined 0.5 percent and construction activity contracted by 0.2 percent as the housing market softened.

Parenting A Race ? Sunny Nash ? Ethnicity and Culture

Parenting?making a home, keeping the family safe and providing for the children?was essential during the Jim Crow era and the Civil Rights Movement, when people like Rosa Parks stepped up to demonstrate to America?s black children how to get their civil rights.

Parenting, making a home and keeping the family sheltered and safe are activities that cross all racial, ethnic, economic and gender boundaries. Home and family got America through slavery, the Civil War, Jim Crow, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, assassinations of presidents and national leaders, integration, re-segregation and post-racism.

The first signs of life on earth appeared about 4.5 Ga (1 Ga is an American billion, ie. 109 years) ago. It?s not yet completely certain exactly?how this life arose; hot volcanic mineral springs have been suggested, as have the more traditional lightning-struck primordial soups and (rather wonderfully) radioactive beaches. At any rate something happened which lead to a little membrane-bound ball with internal nucleic acids which, crucially, could replicate?

I've never been convinced by the lightening explanation myself, but it would have been a wonderfully dramatic moment!

And then it was all over really, bar the evolution.

The atmosphere back then was very different, little oxygen and an abundance of carbon dioxide with plenty of methane being released into the atmosphere once the first life forms started eking out an entropy-defying existence. In order to get energy to power cellular processes you need to set up redox pathways, which involve cycles of electron donors and acceptors. The main electron donors around at the time were H2, H2S and CH4 and the main acceptor probably nitrogenous. Water, the electron donor used for photosynthesis, was around in abundance, but none of the little proto-life-blobs quite had the energy required to split it (or the physical proteins required back then either) so it mostly stayed unused.

Carbon dioxide levels went down, methane levels went up and the planet warmed up a little due to global warming. Things stayed like that for a billion years or so (1 Ga) and then something quite special happened, something that would have mindblowingly devastating affects on the life surrounding it.

Photosynthesis. The process by which carbon dioxide is fixed into usable sugars by the splitting of a water molecule. The process of photosynthesis produces oxygen, which is highly dangerous for cells; it can?screw up the internal redox potential, create dangerous free-radicals and precipitate ions out into soluble forms.?This means that from the point of view of every other organism the newly-evolved photosynthetic blobs were floating around spewing toxic gas into the atmosphere.

Floating green blobs of DEATH. Image from wikimedia commons.

The arrival of this new resource (oxygen) lead to a change in the way organisms respired as well. Up until what is sometimes called the Great Oxidation Event most respiration was anoxic, probably similar to anaerobic respiration, or fermentation, ?in anaerobic bacteria around today. This process, while enough t0 keep life going, is around sixteen times less efficient than aerobic respiration. The proto-bacteria that managed to use the oxygen would therefore have gained a major energy boost.

This energy boost allowed the oxygen-using bacteria to go forth and multiply, leaving the anoxic bacteria clinging to the few environmental niches where no oxygen could penetrate. Some of these oxygen-using bacteria were swallowed up by larger cells who then used them as specialised intracellular breathing compartments. The bacteria became mitochondria, and the cells with mitochondria grew bigger and formed more intracellular compartments. They became eukaryotic cells, the kind of cells that all multicellular animals are made from.

So even now, when you breath, it?s ancient bacteria inside your cells that process the oxygen. The only part of the human cell that does oxidative-respiration is the mitochondria. Sure, the human part of the cell can produce small amounts of energy in the cytoplasm, but then the whole process is shuttled into the mitochondria in order to get the massive oxygen energy boost.

One biochemical trick that evolved around two billion years ago to take advantage of oxgyen is still being used for respiration by all multicellular life on earth.

Coxsackie, My Appetite & Healthy Food - Operation Muffin Top ...

Readers and friends, I am so sorry this blog post is late! This week was an unusual week to say the least ? I caught the coxsackie virus ? EEEEK!! The coxsackie virus spreads like wildfire amongst kids in school (if you?re a teacher, you know exactly what I?m talking about). And, even adults get it! As much as I?d like to NOT admit it because of my belief that I?m uber healthy, yes, I was oh-so-lucky to have caught this virus. And the battle with this never-desired coxsackie began on Monday morning with a fever of 103 and sore throat. The fever broke by Wednesday morning, and by Wednesday night I noticed the blisters on my fingers, legs and toes. Thursday morning I developed the sores in my mouth. Sounds pretty, right?

With this pleasant ?rash? I also experienced some lower abdominal pain and a headache at the beginning of the week. Since this virus is so contagious, I was forced to stay away from family and friends as well as stay out of the gym. Today marks 1 week since I last had a real work out ? this is killing me. Saturday morning is one of my favorite mornings at the gym. I do 30 minutes of abs and then 1 hour of high intensity total body conditioning. This Saturday, not so much. BUT, this morning I did wake up with a better attitude! The sores in my mouth felt much better and the blisters on my feet stopped bothering me. The absolute best part about this morning? MY APPETITE CAME BACK!! Oh, did I mention I have not been hungry since Sunday? Oh yes, loss of appetite is another symptom of this coxcrappy thang?

That being said, some of you would probably read this and say ?Lucky you! I wish I didn?t have an appetite!? Poo poo to that, I LOVE eating. Most people do love eating, but when you can love eating tasty, healthy food, what?s better? Healthy food does taste good. I repeat, healthy food does taste good. I think this is part of the battle with those who refuse to ?eat healthy? ? they believe the food is disgusting. Others fall into the trap and believe they are eating healthy while they base their purchases on food claims. If we approach food in a way that is healthy and make real food choices based on nutrients and taste instead of only taste and/or food claims, then we?d all be better off.

Nutrition can be so confusing to the average consumer?they are bombarded with so many food claims that are just part of the food marketing scam. I was in marketing for 5+ years. I didn?t do marketing for food, but I understand thoroughly now how food marketing and advertising works? So, here are a few traps you should never get caught in:

When it says ?fat free? salad dressing, that doesn?t mean it?s healthier ? we need fats (good fats). And if the food has been processed to remove the fat, that means it?s far from it?s natural state (who?s to say it was is it?s natural state to begin with) and sugar, sodium, or another component has been added to make it taste better.
Just because ?diet? soda has less calories, it is NOT healthier for you. For one thing, it?s soda. For another thing, diet soda has chemicals like aspartame, known to cause cancer, so it should just be avoided, period. We need calories to live, but not calories from soda.
You will see the ?whole grains? claim on numerous cereal boxes?I bet most, if not all, are also loaded with sugar. Whole grains are an excellent source of nutrition, as they contain essential enzymes, iron, dietary fiber, vitamin E and B-complex vitamins. Boxed cereal does not provide these nutrients.
And as a bonus, just because it says ?real fruit? on a fruit roll-up box, you aren?t consuming anything real and forget about the fruit part. Please choose an apple or fresh berries.

Are you now wondering what you should look for then? Here are some tips:

Start with the perimeter at the grocery store: The perimeter is the setup of the fresh, whole foods along the perimeter of most stores, like produce, fresh meat, dried beans and nuts. There are no food claims on broccoli, onions, garlic or avocados, right?
Take a trip to a health food store and just browse: Going to a health food store, like Mrs. Greens, can be very overwhelming (yet intriguing) if you have never been. I remember the first time I went to Mrs. Greens. I spent almost an hour looking through types of food I didn?t know about. Now that I have fantastic educational background from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I understand the benefits of hemp, goji berries, and kombucha.
Try new recipes: I hope we have some cooks out there! To me, cooking is fun, relaxing and easy (practice makes perfect). Did you know you can make homemade granola bars? Popsicles? Broccoli pesto sauce? I have recipes for all 3 of these and they take less than 15 minutes for prep! Cooking doesn?t have to be a burden or time consuming. Sometimes you may be hesitant because you don?t know what to cook or where to find healthy recipes. I suggest researching nutrition blogs (there are so many out there!) or starting with websites such as http://www.eatcleandiet.com/ or http://www.thegraciouspantry.com/.

Thank you, coxsackie, for bringing back my appetite. I?m ready to enjoy some home-made food. I even have leftover home-made mango popsicles from the batch I made for my throat ? yippy!

Running a Bed and Breakfast - ApostolicCM.com Answers

Starting any Bed and Breakfast Business
If you are considering starting your own b&b business in addition to already dreaming of the time spent raking in the tourist dollars, critique these tips before you start and save some heartaches.

    1. What?s regarding breakfast?
Regardless of what you think about your scenic location you have decided or the amazing travel and leisure activities nearby, your current range of breakfast is a big take into account being booked.
Travellers would like a good hearty breakfast to start the day with. This means understanding that healthy food is lowest desired, and the big breakfast or even bacon and ovum will dominate recption menus. Ensure that you are able to prepare these foods to suitable restaurant expectations. Travellers do not want cold scraggly shopping dishes put in entrance of them.
    2. Are you based at the travel destination?
Almost all travellers select b&b in brussels based on the fact that they are near their picked out destination point. Either because they want to get a young start at the action or they want a place to sleep after going to the tourist attractions.
If your bed and also breakfast is located along the travel path, or worse, this is not on the travel path, you will have to work really hard to be able to get travellers stopping halfway combined their journey to rest.
    3. Sharing your home
You need to consider the major issues involved when strangers sleeping in your bed and breakfast rooms if they?re part of your own housing. You need to be comfortable with the truth that they will often walk around your rooms at all hrs of the night.
Are the valuables secured as well as out of sight
When they are injured, what is the initial aid like
Do you have safety plans for possible violence or issues with travellers
If they come back afterwards in the day, is definitely someone you have faith in always looking after the particular rooms.
    4. Give them space
Travellers usually are not there for your own amusement or to be a means to fix the isolated place you find yourself in. If you are talking too much in their mind and always hanging around them, give them some space and find other friends to socialise with.
Tourists often want to share their holiday break experiences with their unique friends or family, and not with you. Once you have welcomed these and has a short warm and friendly chat, get out of their sight.
The most important problem I have seen having bed and breakfast operators is because fail to understand the tourist seasonal patterns which in turn cause vacancy rates to drop rapidly inside off-season. Most of the time your B&B is going to be empty and depend on the summer season for being fully booked only to cover annual expenses.
Make sure all your predicted budgets allow for the mix in vacancy premiums in your type of business.

UN states fail to reach global arms trade treaty

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Member states failed to reach agreement Friday on a new U.N. treaty to regulate the multibillion dollar global arms trade, and some diplomats and supporters blamed the United States for triggering the unraveling of the monthlong negotiating conference.

Hopes had been raised that agreement could be reached on a revised treaty text that closed some major loopholes by Friday's deadline for action. But the U.S. announced Friday morning that it needed more time to consider the proposed treaty ? and Russia and China then also asked for more time.

"This was stunning cowardice by the Obama administration, which at the last minute did an about-face and scuttled progress toward a global arms treaty, just as it reached the finish line," said Suzanne Nossel, executive director of Amnesty International USA. "It's a staggering abdication of leadership by the world's largest exporter of conventional weapons to pull the plug on the talks just as they were nearing an historic breakthrough."

A Western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, also blamed the U.S., saying "they derailed the process," adding that nothing will happen to revive negotiations until after the U.S. presidential election in November.

Chief U.S. negotiator Thomas Countryman refused to talk to several dozen reporters when the meeting broke up.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, said in a statement Friday evening that the U.S. supports a second round of negotiations next year.

"While we sought to conclude the month's negotiations with a treaty, more time is a reasonable request for such a complex and critical issue," the satement said.

The draft treaty would require all countries to establish national regulations to control the transfer of conventional arms and to regulate arms brokers. It would prohibit states that ratify the treaty from transferring conventional weapons if they would violate arms embargoes or if they would promote acts of genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes.

In considering whether to authorize the export of arms, the draft says a country must evaluate whether the weapon would be used to violate international human rights or humanitarian laws or be used by terrorists, organized crime or for corrupt practices.

Many countries, including the U.S., control arms exports but there has never been an international treaty regulating the estimated $60 billion global arms trade. For more than a decade, activists and some governments have been pushing for international rules to try to keep illicit weapons out of the hands of terrorists, insurgent fighters and organized crime.

The U.N. General Assembly voted in December 2006 to work toward a treaty regulating the growing arms trade, with the U.S. casting a "no" vote. In October 2009, the Obama administration reversed the Bush administration's position and supported an assembly resolution to hold four preparatory meetings and a four-week U.N. conference in 2012 to draft an arms trade treaty.

The United States insisted that a treaty had to be approved by the consensus of all 193 U.N. member states.

Ambassador Roberto Garcia Moritan, the conference chairman, said treaty supporters knew "this was going to be difficult to achieve."

He said negotiations failed because some delegations didn't like the draft though "the overwhelming majority in the room did." He added that some countries from the beginning of negotiations had "different views" on a treaty, including Syria, Iran and North Korea.

Amnesty's Nossel accused the U.S. of raising eleventh-hour issues "and wanting more time to consult with itself," which stopped the momentum toward agreement.

Despite the failure to reach agreement, Moritan predicted that "we certainly are going to have a treaty in 2012."

He said there are several options for moving forward in the General Assembly which will be considered over the summer, before the world body's new session begins in September.

Ambassador Jean-Hugues Simon-Michel, who led the French delegation, called Friday's result "the worst-case scenario."

"I'm disappointed but not discouraged," he said. "The ball is now in the court of the General Assembly but the risk is that countries may want to start negotiations from scratch."

Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, said the General Assembly needs to decide whether to move forward with the treaty text that was close to adoption or reopen old issues.

"What we have now is an uncertain outcome that leaves in doubt the support of the major arms exporters and importers, including the U.S. and Russia, and that needs to be overcome," he said. "This is a delicate moment and it's going to require real leadership on the part of key states including the European countries, Washington and others."

The powerful National Rifle Association in the U.S. has portrayed the treaty as a surrender of gun ownership rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. The politically controversial issue has re-emerged since last week's shooting at a Colorado cinema that killed 12 people.

But the draft treaty reaffirms "the sovereign right and responsibility of any state to regulate and control transfers of conventional arms that take place exclusively within its territory, pursuant to its own legal or constitutional systems." And it states clearly that the treaty's aim is to establish the highest standards "for regulating, or improving the regulation of the international trade in conventional arms" ? not domestic trade.

On Thursday, a bipartisan group of 51 senators threatened to oppose the treaty if it falls short in protecting Americans' constitutional right to bear arms. In a letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the senators expressed serious concerns with the draft treaty that has circulated at the United Nations, saying that it signals an expansion of gun control that would be unacceptable.

During negotiations, the United States objected to any requirement to report on exports of ammunition, and that remains out of the latest draft. It does call for every country to regulate the export of ammunition.

Britain has taken the lead in pushing for a treaty.

Ahead of Friday's meeting, Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg discussed treaty prospects with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in London and both urged the treaty's adoption.

"Global rules govern the sale of everything from bananas to endangered species to weapons of mass destruction, but not guns or grenades," Clegg said. "This anomaly causes untold suffering in conflicts around the world. 1,000 people are killed daily by small arms wielded by terrorists, insurgents and criminal gangs."

The secretary-general said he was disappointed at the failure to agree on a treaty, calling it "a setback." But Ban said he was encouraged that states have agreed to continue pursuing a treaty and pledged his "robust" support.

At the end of the negotiating session, Mexico read a joint statement from more than 90 countries saying they "are determined to secure an Arms Trade Treaty as soon as possible."

Updated at 1:05 p.m. ET: A topless woman confronted the head of the Russian Orthodox Church as he arrived in Kiev on Thursday in the latest in a string of eye-catching stunts pulled by a Ukrainian feminist group.

An activist from the Femen women's rights group rushed towards Patriarch?Kirill?with bared breasts, yelling "Get out!", the Russian state news agency reported, before she was bundled away by security guards.

The European Pressphoto Agency reported that the Femen protest aimed to highlight a demand for greater independence for Ukraine's main orthodox church, which still answers to the Moscow Patriarchate.

"Regrettably, people are trying to mar the Patriarch's visit to Ukraine through these stunts," the head of the patriarch's press service, Deacon Alexander Volkov, said, adding that such incidents signal "a deep spiritual crisis in some social circles."

    (PRWEB) July 27, 2012

Cupid's Arrow, Inc. has announced the debut of a new dating website created especially for Assyrian singles. The new Assyrian dating site, found online at AssyrianCupid.com, will be a resource for single Assyrians all over the world. As the creators of the new website explain, "The Assyrian culture is rich and vibrant, representing an extraordinarily special way of life, and since Assyrians may live in virtually any part of the world today, we want to make it truly easy for them to reach out to others who share this special history and culture. Finding a partner who shares your morals, values, language and culture is so vital when seeking a quality relationship, so we are connecting Assyrians with potential partners with whom they can really identify and fall in love!"

The Assyrian culture is unique in that it has survived thousands of years even in the absence of a country. Assyrians are a distinct ethnic group whose origins come from ancient Mesopotamia. Today, many Assyrians are scattered around the globe with heavy concentrations in Iraq, Syria, the United States, and throughout much of Europe. Assyrians often come from families where tradition is important and have been raised celebrating Assyrian culture and customs; however, meeting other Assyrians who share these values can be challenging. Whether people are seeking friendship, romance, marriage or the ability to chat with Assyrians all over the world, AssyrianCupid will meet their needs, directing them to potential matches. As the website owners say, "Preserving the Assyrian culture and way of life is so vital to those who cherish it. To preserve this culture and language for future generations, marriage to other Assyrians with whom we truly identify is essential. That is why Assyrian Cupid exists ? to make these unions possible!"

The Assyrian Cupid website is as always free to register and currently includes a trial period where users can enjoy the benefits of paid members by being able to browse profiles, send messages, use chat rooms, video chat and much more. For those who are new to online dating, Assyrian Cupid also provides a plethora of informative articles on anything from dating safety to creating the perfect profile.

Potential website members will need to supply basic information, including gender and location, and then select a user name to begin the simple registration process. To make registration and searching for matches as user-friendly as possible, Assyrian Cupid also allows users to sign in through its Facebook app.

The website is now live at AssyrianCupid.com, and it is accepting registrations from single Assyrians who want to meet Assyrians online that share their culture for friendship, dating, relationships and marriage.

N.J. Utility Renews 825 KSF Lease in Newark | Commercial Property ...

    Jul. 26th, 2012

    By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor

Both the City of Newark and the State of New Jersey have breathed a sigh of relief now that Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. has decided to keep 80 Park Plaza as its address, courtesy of a long-term lease renewal.

PSEG?s lease agreement with Wells Real Estate Investment Trust II, owner of the 1 million-square-foot office high-rise, marks one of the Garden State?s largest real estate transactions?ever. The utility company relied on commercial real estate services firm Colliers International to negotiate the transaction, which allows the company to remain at the building it has called home since 1979. However, PSEG did some looking around before making the decision to continue to maintain its home base in Newark, where it has kept its headquarters for over a century.

?We looked at a number of different alternatives, which included the suburbs in different locations, as well as New Brunswick,? Bryn Cinque, an senior managing director with Colliers, told Commercial Property Executive. ?What they were looking for was the best value for their ratepayers, shareholders, as well as for the employees, and [80 Park Plaza] proved to be the most cost effective option for them.?

Overall, the New Jersey office market is holding steady in its struggle to recover, although there are a few bright spots. Northern New Jersey is experiencing signs of health with positive net absorption and a reduction in vacancies in the second quarter, as per a Colliers report. And Newark, specifically, is faring better than most markets, but it would have faced a big challenged had PSEG decided to set up shop elsewhere.

?The lease is very important to the Newark office market,? Cinque noted. ?Although the Penn Station Market in Newark has about a six or seven percent vacancy rate, had PSEG vacated its building, the vacancy rate would have increased significantly, which would have put significant downward pressure on rental rates. So it certainly keeps the market more stabilized.?

PSEG is not alone in its appreciation of the advantages of Newark as a prime business location. Panasonic Corp. has announced its plans to build a 338,000-square-foot headquarters at a cost as $200 million. Additionally, Prudential is reportedly considering a local relocation to a build-to-suit. ?The primary attraction is the transportation convenience, both the rail to the airport, as well as the highway infrastructure,? said Cinque. ?And it does have numerous amenities locally within the central business district.?

US court upholds new rules for airline tickets

U.S. regulators acted within their authority when they imposed new airline ticketing rules, such as requiring that the total price including taxes be prominently displayed in print advertisements, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday.

The ruling is a defeat for Allegiant Travel Co, Southwest Airlines Co and Spirit Airlines Inc, which challenged all or some of the rules.

Evidence submitted "sufficiently support the intuitive conclusion that customers are likely to be deceived by price quotes significantly lower than the actual cost of travel," Judge David Tatel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit wrote.

Colorado shooting: Why calling Obama 'anti-gun' is smart politics

The gun lobby's bid to preempt new gun-control measures appears to be working. Even in the wake of Colorado massacre, Obama ? dubbed by the NRA 'the most anti-gun president in history' ? is defending gun rights.

    By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / July 23, 2012

President Obama pauses as he speaks about the Aurora, Colo., shooting at a campaign event at the Harborside Event Center in Ft. Myers, Fla. on July 20.

    Susan Walsh/AP

Following last week?s massacre at a movie theater in Colo., President Obama has offered words of healing and condolence, including a trip to the state Sunday to meet with families and survivors. Never in any of the president?s or his administration's public statements has there been a suggestion that he would use the incident to advocate for tougher guns laws.

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

In fact, to the dismay of gun-control supporters, Team Obama has gone out of its way to affirm the president?s support of gun rights since the Colorado tragedy. When asked Sunday whether Mr. Obama might propose new policies affecting access to guns, White House press secretary Jay Carney sounded more like a spokesman for the National Rifle Association (NRA) than for a Democratic president.

?He believes we need to take steps that protect Second Amendment rights of the American people but that ensure that we are not allowing weapons into the hands of individuals who should not, by existing law, obtain those weapons,? Mr. Carney told reporters on Air Force One en route to Colorado.

But gun-rights advocates are undeterred. At the NRA?s special website GunBaNObama.com, there is a message the 4-million-member NRA has been promoting since before Obama took office: ?Obama would be the most anti-gun president in American history.??

The evidence all comes from his record pre-presidency, including a statement chiding then-President George W. Bush for not pushing to renew a ban on assault weapons and another opposing the carrying of concealed weapons. ?

During the 2008 campaign, there was perhaps no greater gaffe by Obama than his secretly recorded comment at a San Francisco fundraiser in which he said that people in small-town Pennsylvania, wracked by job losses, ?get bitter? and ?cling to guns or religion.?

Now the argument by gun-rights advocates is this: If Obama is reelected, he will have no more elections to worry about, and then he will show his true colors on guns. This was the message promoted by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre at the Conservative Political Action Conference last February.

?All that first-term lip service to gun owners is just part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment in his second term,? Mr. LaPierre said to thunderous applause.

In political terms, the timing of the Colorado massacre could hardly have been worse for Obama, says Richard Feldman, a former NRA lobbyist and president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association.

Sheriff discusses partnerships with Marlborough mayor

Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian visited Marlborough on July 9 to meet with Mayor Arthur Vigeant about community programs run by the sheriff?s office.

?Municipal partnerships are a top priority for me as sheriff, and I appreciated the opportunity to discuss our programs with Mayor Vigeant, who welcomes the prospect of collaborating with the Middlesex Sheriff?s Office,? Koutoujian said. ?I look forward to working with the mayor to utilize the resources we offer to better serve the residents of Marlborough.?

?Sheriff Koutoujian and I had a great meeting,? Authorities believe Katherine Jackson is in Ariz.

After a flurry of tweets and speculation that Katherine Jackson ? Michael Jackson's mother ? had gone missing, she is safe and sound. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By NBC News and wire services

Despite reports that Katherine Jackson, Michael Jackson's mother, is missing, authorities on Sunday said they now believe the matriarch is safe in Arizona with family members.

Katherine Jackson, 82, was officially reported missing Saturday night by a concerned family member?amid a dispute over the estate of her superstar son. She is the guardian of his three minor children, Paris, Prince Michael and Blanket Jackson.?

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was still trying to speak with Katherine Jackson but said she reportedly is with other relatives. Deputies told NBC News they would like Jackson to contact the Malibu Lost Hills Sheriff's Office.

Early Sunday morning, NBC News received a letter from an attorney who says she represents Katherine Jackson. The letter indicated that?Katherine Jackson was believed to be missing but did not offer any clues as to her whereabouts.

Paris Jackson, the 14-year-old daughter of the late Michael Jackson, tweeted early Sunday that her grandmother was missing.

"I haven't spoken with her in a week I want her home now," she posted from her Twitter account. She also tweeted a number for people to contact in case they saw the 82-year-old matriarch of the famous singing clan.

It was unclear who was caring for the children during Katherine Jackson's absence.

Katherine Jackson also hadn't been in contact with her attorneys, who worked Sunday to learn more information about her whereabouts and why she had suddenly become incommunicado, including with her grandchildren.

"First of all, let's hope that this is all just a big misunderstanding and a totally benign situation," her attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said Sunday. "Assuming that she did actually leave on doctor's orders, no matter which doctor, it has certainly created an absolutely irregular situation whereby she has been out of contact with her grandchildren."?

The family drama unfolded days after it was revealed that some of Katherine Jackson's children had written a letter to the executors of Michael Jackson's estate, alleging his will, which left his fortune to his children, his mother and charity, was a fake.

The undated letter, signed by Janet, Randy, Tito, Rebbie and Jermaine Jackson, claimed Katherine Jackson was being manipulated by the executors, John Branca and John McClain, her health had been affected, and she suffered a mini-stroke.

The legitimacy of the letter was confirmed by Randy Jackson on Twitter, and Janet Jackson retweeted his post.

The estate has denied the accusations.

Paris Jackson lashed out at her uncle Randy Jackson on Twitter, saying her grandmother was fine.

"I will defend my beloved family member with all I have, even if it means from other family members," the tweet said.

She later apologized, saying she just wanted to let people know that her grandmother did not have a stroke.

Katherine Jackson's attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said Friday that his client did not have a stroke, according to his interactions with her and with her relatives. Sanders could not immediately be reached Sunday for comment.

On Friday, Jermaine Jackson tweeted that his mother was resting on the orders of a doctor in Arizona.

"I want to reassure everyone (inc all sudden medical experts) that mother is fine but is resting up in AZ on the orders of a doctor, not us," he tweeted.

Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the June 2009 propofol overdose death of Jackson at age 50.

Attorneys handling Jackson's estate and financial matters are routinely in court, but a hearing on the guardianship hasn't been held since December. That hearing was a routine session to approve attorneys' fees and there are no future hearings currently scheduled.

Caity Cudworth, a representative for the Jackson brothers Jermaine, Jackie, Tito and Marlon, who are on a nationwide tour, did not immediately respond to an early Sunday morning request for comment, nor did Danielle Marie Owens, a representative for Janet Jackson.

Jackson's estate recently filed court records indicating it had generated gross earnings of $475 million and successfully handled hundreds of millions of dollars in debts the singer had accrued.

Sanders filed a request to audit the estate's financial records and said Friday he made the routine request three weeks ago and it was not prompted by the Jackson siblings' letter.

Sanders said he did not think the estate had done anything wrong, but Katherine Jackson's team should be provided with detailed records of the estate's finances.

"I think it's part of appropriate due diligence," he said of the audit.

Information from the Associated Press was included in this report.
